House of the Day: 180 Washington Park

If you’re a Wall Street Journal reader, you may already be familiar with this new listing at 180 Washington Park in Fort Greene—the 22-foot brownstone was featured when it hit the market earlier this month with a price tag of $2,750,000, most likely because it was owned by Spike Lee back in the 1990s. We’re certainly digging the location, size and type of the house. There’s also tons of original detail that is right up our alley. The renovation, though, feels too over-the-top to us. Call us old-fashioned, but the glitziness and polish of the whole thing feels a little out of place for Fort Greene. And that yard? What were they thinking? We suspect the sellers would have been better served by a more understated approach, especially when it comes to reselling in these non-boom times.

I think it’s a disgrace to the city that such property carries a $5K tax. It should have been 6-8 times than that.
DIBS! Did they say your place was too fancy or not fancy enough? It’s a fine line here on Brownstoner between Versailles and a slum in a slum.
Is that a WINDOW A/C unit + steam radiator I see in pic 5 of 7 in the Corco listing?!
That’s a Deal Breaker on a $2MM+ house.
It looks like a hotel! Not a boutique hotel….run of the mill chain hotel.
I think there is a deck, just not shown in the floorplan. Otherwise there’s a door leading to nowhere.
Does it bother anyone that this is at least a 10 min walk to the subway?
Dibs, I think the idea is not to have a renter, but rather have a studio/party room on the ground floor. Then I could lend it for fund-raising events to my favorite pet project organizations and politicians. A deck! Pshaw!
LOVE:
— The view from the front parlor of Fort Greene Park. I haven’t seen it from here but have been in other houses on the block on house tours and it’s truly spectacular. The bottom of the window sills lines up perfectly with the grading of the park so you feel you’re looking right into your own private green space.
— The new french doors into the front parlor (daring but successful).
— The central kitchen. The soul/center of the house and great for entertaining.
— The intimate dining room with window seat facing the garden.
HATE:
— The ghastly back yard.
— The chintzy bathtub plunked down in the middle of the bathroom like Dr Who’s tardis just landed there.
— The loss of the upstairs hall rooms. While a full width upstairs sitting room is a great thing, oversized bedrooms leave me cold and those hall rooms can be so useful as bedrooms for small children or a small study.
I dont think I could take a dump where spike has. Pass
….Speaking of Spike, my fellow Morehouse brother is celebrating Michael Jackson’s 51st BDay Saturday Aug. 29th from noon till 5pm.
….in Ft. Greene Park of course.
Buggin’ Out: Hey, Sal, how come they ain’t no brothas on the wall?
