If you’re a Wall Street Journal reader, you may already be familiar with this new listing at 180 Washington Park in Fort Greene—the 22-foot brownstone was featured when it hit the market earlier this month with a price tag of $2,750,000, most likely because it was owned by Spike Lee back in the 1990s. We’re certainly digging the location, size and type of the house. There’s also tons of original detail that is right up our alley. The renovation, though, feels too over-the-top to us. Call us old-fashioned, but the glitziness and polish of the whole thing feels a little out of place for Fort Greene. And that yard? What were they thinking? We suspect the sellers would have been better served by a more understated approach, especially when it comes to reselling in these non-boom times.

  1. I agree gemini, I don’t care for the decor (the house itself is beautiful). Can’t put my finger on it but feels too ostentatious. Just seems to be shiny and brown everywhere.
Kind of reminds me of the Ralph Lauren section of a department store.

  2. i’m confused by the layout – does the ground floor tenant get the yard? Laundry on the top floor seems painful, and that living room is awkward and narrow. the yard is fine as is – just add comfortable outdoor furniture like a couch and chairs with waterproof fabrics. Imaging that if you had some brown wicker that would also help. Then add planters with small trees and flowering plants – it’ll warm up the area from being so sterile.

  3. “That yard is straight out of Mill Basin. I love it. :P”

I couldn’t quite come up with the words to describe the yard but that about sums it up.
It’s only lacking the faux marble fountain.

  4. Gotta admit
not sure I am diggin’ the look of this place
I agree the fireplace castle is totally over the top so is that bathroom, the kitchen seems cool but the outdoor space again isn’t to my liking
so I won’t guess on price
