What’s a beautiful house in Crown Heights North worth these days? We have no idea, but this listing at 1265 Dean Street should help provide a data point. The four-story Romanesque Revival house is dripping with original detail, including some serious wood paneling, and is located on “one of the loveliest blocks in all of Brooklyn,” according to the Landmarks Preservation Commission. The corner location means lots of light but, on the downside, it also means higher taxes. The asking price is $925,000. Any guesses?

  1. I am not wowed by the pictures, which are mostly halls, stairs, and more halls. There is no photo of the parlor that shows the fireplace. The bedroom is too big.

There are some glitches with the floor plan. For example, the downstairs rental apt placed the bathroom in the middle of the bedroom, which ruins the bedroom. It also opens directly off the kitchen, which is disgusting as well as inconvenient. They could have put it in the hall and still used the plumbing stack near the kitchen.

A second big glitch is the tiny side kitchen in the owner’s triplex. Though the adjacent breakfast room is awesome.

    However, note, no photos.

  2. Wow! What a house. Love those cool sliver windows down the side. Imagine what that house could look like with some tasteful renovation. One would think that 800 would be a fair price but I am not too familiar with the Crown Heights market.

  3. That’s one incredible block from the Streetview. I’m jealous, ENY.

Also if you follow Steretview down New York, you can see that there’s a nice 2 car brick garage. There’s room for a deck on top of that or one on top of the 1st/2nd floor extension.

  4. “What do you do about schools here?”

My kid is well beyond grade school age, but if you’re not into the local public schools there are several parochial schools to which many local parents send their kids. Montrose probably has more specifics about these schools, but there are two in my immediate vicinity, and they seem to be excellent (kids wear uniforms and almost always are dropped off by their parents). Also, can’t speak to the quality of the curriculum, and haven’t looked up the scores, but the George V. Brower public elementary school seems to be very good. The principal is an extremely hard worker; I’ve run into him many mornings when I’m out walking my dog in Brower Park. He’s invariably in there working long before the kids show up. A very good sign.

  5. Well, not having any I don’t know much about schools in the area. But I do know a new school is being built now a few blocks down on pacific and I’m not sure but I think it is going to have a heavy emphasis on the arts.

  6. weather is warming up. stroll thru the hood yourself and make your own judgement of the area. But dont be surprised that you’ll love it. Don’t have to buy now. Can always rent to wait for better prices.

  7. Dave,

Yes, I remember some threads on this. I think either Biff or wasder advanced the theory with some vigor a while back, with some fairly good evidence. I think it is pretty close to settled now.
