Wow. Could this 4,000-square-foot spread at The Montauk Club be the coolest apartment in all of Brooklyn? If it had outdoor space it would be a lay-up. As is, though, the entire floor of the historic club is pretty darn impressive, with its 45-foot-long ballroom and original leaded glass windows, mahogany wainscotting and inlaid mosaic tiles. Crazy. This time, the listing’s claim that this is a “once in a lifetime offering” isn’t B.S.

  1. Yes THIS place was for sale once maybe late 90’s for a million bucks. HA HA AHA AHAHA I thought that was expensive then, and it is expensive now. HA AHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH, But I would have bought it back then if I had the money.

  2. “But someone out there is dying for a place like this and will probably put up the dough.”

I’m sure you’re correct about that.

“you’d have to fill the rooms with scores of people eating, drinking, and dancing to make them feel right. (Cigar smoke would be helpful, too.)”

That was my image…..the place looks like what it was…a former ballroom/banquet hall. Although I DO love a good cigar!

  3. Brownstoner:

This is a handsome place — as a club.

The scale, proportions, and finishes of the rooms are hardly domestic. Compare this “apartment” with contemporaries at the Dakota. The latter are big but still feel like places to live. Not the case here, where you’d have to fill the rooms with scores of people eating, drinking, and dancing to make them feel right. (Cigar smoke would be helpful, too.)

I remember one of the butlers at the Montauk Club, many years before its reincarnation as a “hip” literary salon. He was very old school, with a barrel chest, head like a rock, and eyes that would pierce any errant youngster to the bowels.

To think of living in a place where he once roamed the halls gives me the shudders.

    Nostalgic on Park Avenue

  4. Almost positive it was on the market for $999,000 in 1998/9, since my boyfriend used to joke about buying it. Wish I knew (and had) then what I know (and still don’t quite have) now!

I also looked at the smaller apartments upstairs when they were first for sale. (Couldn’t afford those either.) I remember them being cleverly tucked into eaves, but that was a long time ago. Does anyone know if any have been sold in recent years?
