Bad News for Bed Stuy Bodegas
From a Bed-Stuy Patch article written by a real estate broker: “Let your friends know you heard it here first: Bed Stuy mixed-use property is about to explode. When this happens, start the clock on your local bodegas. Because in about five years, their time will be up.” Photo by gkjarvis

Maybe I will see if my local church has an interest in a dance class. Maybe Haitian dance.
This article overstates the case. Stuy Heights needs one nice good quality grocery store, and a coop would be ideal because the prices are low. On the East we already have an awesome Asian run produce store and a decent C Town at Halsey and Broadway.
High quality attractive restaurants (Peaches and Saraghina) are doing great. Other businesses, unfortunately not.
I for one would love a yoga hip hop dance class place for adults and kids, but I’m not sure the average local has the time or money to support that.
rob seriously!!! Do you think all of the long time residence of bed stuy like having to hike out of the area to get decent produce? I know quite a few people who grew up in Bed Stuy and Crown Heights who hate whats available and leave the neighborhood to shop for food. Why do you think the Pathmark at the Atlantic Mall is packed and surrounded by gypsy cabs?
Also I think that picture is in Sunset Park. Also Sunset Park has awesome produce.
also also, Rob you live in Park Slope and bitch constantly about it. Bitching about not having decent produce is a little more sane than complaining about hating vegan farm raised sandwiches all the time.

Think of it in a way that would affect you…what if you lived in a place where you couldn’t get a 40 oz or a pack of Newports?
I HAVE TO TRACK OVER AN ENTIRE AVENUE AND 4 BLOCKS FOR 40’S AND NEWPORTS BTW (WELL AT LEAST NEWPORTS THAT ARENT SEVERELY OVERPRICED LIKE THE ONES ON 5TH AVENUE!)
and please, bed stuy is not lacking in fresh groceries. maybe overpriced dirty beardo rooftop veggies yeah, but not fresh groceries, there are supermarkets there…

I live in bed-stuy and love a lot about what it has to offer. I don’t think from dibs postings that he hates it. Why does it always have to be so extreme, Rob? It does not take a 45 dollar chicken to make an improvement. And for the many people who don’t have an easy way of shopping elsewhere, improvements would be greatly appreciated.
Rob, please recognize that there does exist a happy medium between crap bodegas selling crap products and a $45 chicken wing. No one, regardless of the neighborhood they choose to live in, should be left with no options in terms of purchasing quality foods and other goods. A lot of us who live in areas better served by grocery stores, etc. often take such options for granted. Imagine if you wanted to buy fresh groceries to cook dinner for yourself and/or your family but had to trek to another neighborhood to do so. Not a pretty situation. Yes, those people *can* make the trek and maybe should do so until better options come into their own neighborhoods, but they should not be forced to do so owing to a lack of neighborhood options. Think of it in a way that would affect you…what if you lived in a place where you couldn’t get a 40 oz or a pack of Newports? What if you had to get on a train and a bus to obtain those items? You’d be pissed. And what if people told you that you were sick in the head for wanting immediate access to those items? You’d shit enough bricks to build home worthy of HOTD.
Bedford Stuyvesant is more than Bodegas and Chinese take out… It is a real Brooklyn COMMUNITY like no other in New York today. It is nice to have your neighbors say hello, have a good day as your on your way to the train. Its great live in the wonderful architecture from 120 years ago. I am not saying this place is heaven but it is HOME. A place that I love horrible bodegas and all…
Of course bodegas usually sell junk, it’s supply and demand, and the products that sell most ensure their stability. Sure, we’d all love at least one bodega to sell healthy foods, but I don’t want to see all of them perish to supposed new development. They’re an integral part of city life, especially when a larger grocery store is not nearby.
Then again, this article is just regurgitating the same broker babble that has been swirling since 2005, and perhaps even earlier. Bed-Stuy is the new this, the new that, blah blah.
if you hate what bed stuy has to offer, why the hell do you live there? serious question btw.. i think some of you are seriously sick in the head when it comes to stuff like this. not everyone wants to pay forty five dollars for a chicken wing made by someone named Molly from Minnesota. get over yourselves.
