Water management--who can help?

Many thanks for all your responses. I didn’t think snaking was needed because I keep the gutter super clean and check it before expected rain, and the whole system was snaked not long ago and much of it is brand new. But I had Python out all the same and guess what? There was most of what looked to be a shingle in there, presumably from the recent work. Water was making its way past it when it was a smaller amount, but in these downpours it was getting overwhelmed. Thanks again, everyone.

All, We’ve recently had a lot of water come in through our (new, above-grade) extension door during heavy downpours. One issue is that the door isn’t sealed properly, and we’re addressing that. But I’m also concerned about why so much water is coming down the facade in the first place, and want to get that addressed. The contractor suspects the gutter is overflowing due to volume (not leaves etc as it was clean and leader drains well) and has duplicated the condition, but none of my neighbors with the same setup have this issue, nor did we pre-renovation–though it’s possible I only noticed water once it was pouring inside… I’d like to figure out what the issue is and possible solutions, but I’m not sure who to call. Does anyone have any suggestions?

First thing to do is get the sewer line checked and snaked if it’s clogged. We used Econo Sewer shortly after we moved into our place as our backyard drain wasn’t draining. If it works, it’s a pretty cheap fix — under $200 — in the scheme of things.

If the problem is water pouring down the facade, I would call a roofer. A good roofer will be able to address this easily.

i agree with cate. you may need a wider gutter. i had to increase the size of mine, as well as my leader, in february due to ice melt. my roofer did a great job and i would recommend him. AAA Roofing out of Bay Ridge. Renato 347.604.2870

I’ml not sure that a wider gutter is a good idea. If it freezes, as many did last winter, the extra weight many pull it away from the house.

In my experience it’s always clogged gutters, downspouts and storm drains. Water is not moving fast enough through those areas. Gutters fill completely up and run over down the face of your wall. Have a drain cleaning company snake your whole line – gutter, downspout, storm drain and sewer all the way to the street. That will solve your problem but you will have to clean your gutters from time to time to prevent a future problems.
