I am replacing vinyl windows in a two family home. Does anyone have any suggestions or recomendations regarding the replacement or brand of window?

I can tell you what brand not to buy. we went with a company called Superseal from NJ. this was on a recommendation. I would not use them again. first, the window sashes in more than one of the windows are a little too big (up and down) so the are hard to latch. Second, the sills are not really strong enough to support a window a/c unit. the real reason I would not buy them though is not really something that is their fault but a design issue which I should have watched for: the windows are thin double pane; in most instances this is what someone would want, right? this is really why they were recommended to me as they look better. but after we put them in and on hearing the noise from the street, I wish I could pull the double pane glass and install triple for just that room. unfortunately, there is not enough thickness in the sash to do this. When we were purchasing these in ’06, I had wanted Certain T. My former employer back in the 80’s swore up and down about Certain T. I do believe that after I left his employ, he based his entire business on installing only their product. The Certain T product had wide sashes and wide double panes (my father has them in house house and they are thick). they look cheap because of this but I have not heard my father complain about them and if I had them, I would have the option of installing said triple pane glass. now, the person who recommended the Superseal to me steered me away from Certain T as he said “there were some complaints with leaks…” and the product was not what it had been. my father’s were installed in 92 or 93 and he has not had any complaints. I would read Consumer Reports on something like this. also, Brownstoners tend to know more about traditional products (if you were asking about wood windows you would have had a dozen responses), so you will be better to read a little more on your own. also, on the super seal windows, the little tabs which pop out on the sash to keep them from opening all the way (to keep the bad guys out and the little ones in) break quite easily – so easily that if we had ever depended on them, we would be in trouble. Steve
