Tax credits for historic preservation

My 2-family house was just added to the National Register (already on the state and city landmark list) and I am interested in applying for the federal and state tax credits before embarking on facade, stoop and courtyard renovations. Has anyone done this in the past few years? would love some guidance, i.e., do I need to hire a tax adviser for the application? Many thanks!
