Recomendations for new brownstone stoop
Looking for recommendations to build a new brownstone stoop. This would be a brand new stoop (not repair). Please only reply with actual recommendations of firms you have used (not self-promotion). We have a wood frame house and have seen a number of wood frames with nice looking brownstone stoops and are considering that approach (not sold on the idea, but considering it). We would like to speak to a contractor or two to get an idea of what would be involved.

Oh my goodness…I guess I will cross that off my list of things to do.

NYT article in 2012: “Contractors say building a new stoop can cost $35,000 to about $100,000, and if it pokes out onto a public sidewalk, the city must be paid a yearly fee for the space. The fee is generally about $1,000, according to the Transportation Department, or only $25 in a Historic Landmark District. “

I’m sure this varies a lot, but what is the ball park cost for a new stoop?

I am 90 percent finished with a full stoop renovation on my Park Slope home (limestone townhouse, brownstone stoop). We hired Mohamed Hamid, a licensed contractor who has done a lot of work in Brooklyn. He has done a lovely job — the team chiseled the whole stoop, and then laid three layers of material in various stages. We’ll be doing the acid wash, which is the final stage, in a couple of weeks. The whole project has taken about six weeks so far. I’ve been very happy with the quality of the job (which included some detailed carving work to keep the shape of the original ornate details), and the price (we talked to four other contractors, and Mohamed’s bid was in the lower middle-range, but the stoop looks as good now as any I have seen). He has also done some painting, repointing on the back of my home, and other internal woodworking projects, all done very well. You can reach him on mdhamid@verizon.net.

Many people in my neighborhood use Amin, we used him for ours. Most people in the neighborhood are generally impressed by the work. Although ours was not a complete re-do, (still not cheap). I wouldn’t use them for anything other than the stoop though, but that is their specialty.

If you are in a Landmark district: NYC Landmarks will not allow a brick or Brownstone stoop. That said I just used Glenwood Construction to build a non landmarked brick stoop. Trying to match the brick on the lower level does look best, I think. Tahir at Glenwood’s number is 718-213-9394

We used excellent contracting corp 718-502-4414 ask for ‘meras’. We saw his work in Brooklyn heights – while walking the pooch – and hired his company to do some work for 2 places (not a stoop though – facade and sidewalk). He has an add here on right…I have no connection to him (shill) which you can gather from my other posts (not many but all unrelated). Good luck

We have a woodframe and had ours done in brick and granite to match the old brick at the bottom of the house. Not sure exactly what kids of alternate materials they work with but Middle Village construction is who did ours as well as the house next door (she was who recommended them to us). They were fast and I thought reasonable on the price. Like I said I don’t what all kinds of materials they work with but they advertise several different ones.
