Paying for water main break

We had a visit from the DEP and found out that the water main from our house is broken and they gave us a three-day notice. We do not have the insurance…didn’t know there was such a thing until tonight. We also don’t have $6k laying around. The DEP guys thought MAYBE there was such a thing as a payment plan where they bill you every month to pay for the repair. Any one have any insight? Fml. Thanks.

Of course not every water main they install will fail prematurely but I’d go with someone with a better track record. What Mainman did should never happen. Second time I used Figliolia. They were professional and responsive and knowing the history, they kept me informed every step of the way. Since the water main was “new” by water main standards, it was important to identify the point of failure to prevent a recurrence. It was due to a totally failed coupling which was connecting 2 short pieces of water main buried underground in my front garden where there NEVER should have been a coupling. Furthermore, the coupling was overtightened and was probably cracked during the install. When getting prices for the second replacement, I gave Mainman the opportunity to replace the main again at a reduced rate and they refused. I’m glad they didn’t because I’m sure they never would have shown me the cause of the failure.

I used Mainman the first time I replaced my water main. There should never have been a second time. They screwed up big time and the main broke a few months after their warranty expired. They did not stand behind it and I got someone else to do another replacement. Stay away.

just replaced mine paid $5000\. Fire hydrant on my side of street. There are a handful of water main contractors in the city. We used Liberty. Seemed professional. Came out as promised finished the job in one day, concrete sidewalk replacement fine. If you call them they will all come out and give you a written estimate on the spot. They take care of all permits and paper work. Took care of street opening and closing, concrete sidewalk and asphalt. We had the original 100 year old lead line replaced which greatly increased our water flow to the house. Just make sure you cover and protect the basement as they use compressed air to blast through the basement wall and the dust gets everywhere.

You’re responsible AND you have to find and hire the plumber to do the repair. Make sure you get a plumber who specializes in water mains; there are only a handful of them,If you’re lucky enough to live on the side of the street closest to the City main it might cost $4, rather than $6K. The City is only responsible for the large water main to which your’s is attached. You’r luck they didn’t shut off your water without warning, which is what happened to me.
