How much does it cost to cover a sheet metal cornice?

Our developer left the top of the new roof cornice uncapped. We are trying to figure out if it will be a deal breaker based on the costs but need to know how much it will cost. Any insight will be appreciated. Any recommendations on who can do the work? Costs? Is it a code violation? See photo.

I understand the developer is going to make the repair but if I were you I would have my home inspector go over the place with a fine tooth comb. to answer your first question the cornice needs to be capped. Can you imagine the what a full load of snow and ice would do to this? By the way I would inspect the masonry on the parapet wall and the capping stones as there seems to be a lot of tar slopped over cracks.

if you haven’t bought the place yet, hard to figure out from your post, i’d run from it. there were probably shortcuts taken all over.

it looks like they left a lot of things unfinished up there. i don’t know what arrangements you had with them, but i’d get them back there to finish it all or take them to court.

From what I can see in the picture it looks like your cornice is not properly framed out or has any real support. It will probably all need to come down, be properly framed and anchored to the building before you can put it back up. I have never seen a cornice put up like this; they are normally built from the top with all the molding underneath. The last time I built a cornice was with a carpenter that does not have a riggers license, so no longer does them. So sorry I cannot recommend anyone and I am afraid to say this; but this is going to be expensive.

Try contacting AF Cornice, they do that work specifically. Be forwarned the cornice (fiberglass)fabrication and installation for a brownstone is not cheap – minimum prices started at $17K. Not sure about your cornice as it seems to NOT be fiberglass and it just needs to be filled or capped as you stated.
