Help fixing Air Conditioning problems - trying again

We had one of the big local HVAC companies install a system for us about two years ago. They did, in general, a crappy job and haven’t really fixed any of the problems. I’m trying to figure out which problems we can fix and which we will just have to live with. We’re looking for advice on what/how to fix and then someone to do the fixing. – There’s likely a leak in one of the coolant lines that needs to be isolated and possibly replaced. – There are ducts on our roof which leak and need to be sealed better. We’re wondering if they can also be better insulated. They already have some insulation inside. – They mounted a large honeywell filter on the roof. When it rains hard water gets in to the ducts through the filter. We’re looking for someone to come and evaluate the system, make some recommendations and implement them. Thanks

This is in response to the possible leaking, ie; rain water, at the air condioning vents. Much bigger problem than most would relize. Being a part of one of the oldest and largest commercial re-roofing contractors in the United States based in the Los Angeles, California area…… leaking “at the” or “due to” th e air conditioning ducts was a major headache. But by all means it was and still is a big problem. To make a long story short, which would span over the course of 40 years, all I can say is after diagnosing the problem and then passing repair back to the source was fruitless. Not only where we re-roofing contractors, but, air conditioning duct stop the leaks contactors. Probably wouldn’t have assumed the responsibility but we guaranteed our roofs for 20 years on the average and ran service calls for our customer when it rained and the problem was more often than not… leak at the duct, running down into the building and thru the ceiling,…ect…ect….. Soooo… after reading your post, I would say….Good Luck, but you are probably right about some or all of the rain water leaks from ducting.

I can’t follow much of your post, but I can explain the refrigerant lines. If your system has leaked refrigerant, it must be vacuumed down and the remaining refrigerant be recycled properly. Usually we pressurize the line set with compressed nitrogen for the purposes of testing and locating leaks. Oftentimes a fitting is loose, and spraying soap will tell us if it is leaking. After the first leak is located and repaired, pressurize with nitrogen again till it will hold pressure for a good half hour. Service call like this (we do not work in NYC) could be quite a few hours, which we bill $115.00/hr in NJ. It takes the vacuum pump a good long time to draw down the nitrogen before refilling the system with refrigerant, then we still need to test that we are making cold properly.
