Green Roof in a Landmarks Area?

Hello, I have a client who wants us to install a green roof on his home, which is in a landmarks area. The roof is slanted and visible from the street. Does anyone familiar with the vaguaries of Landmarks know what the options are? Thanks, Gennaro. Director Eco Brooklyn, Green Roof Installer.

I agree with Mr. Hill.  Assuming that the roof is not one of the architectural characteristics that they’re attempting to preserve in that particular district, it is possible that they would approve a “green” roof. Without knowing more about the district and the roof it would be hard to say whether it could be done.

In my dealings with LPC, visible does not mean prohibited.  It just means a more lengthy review.  You may have to present to the community board and then the commissioners.  We’ve done this on big projects and have had a lot of success with it.  It’s worth contacting the LPC to ask a few questions.  If you can talk to a staffer, you might get a feeling for how hard it would be to get it approved.   How steep is the roof that it is visible?   Jim Hill, RA, LEED AP Urban Pioneering Architecture
