dead pigeons in yard
My daughter is considering buying a house in Bushwick. There were many dead pigeons in the back yard, some on the ground and some up in the trees. (!) Many pigeons were also flying around the block. We are guessing that somebody is poisoning them. Our biggest concern is: will their yard and soil be contaminated by the poison? They have 2 little dogs and a toddler, and want to grow vegetables out there! How can we find out if it is safe? Carol Barclay Carol.Barclay@me.com

I got to see the house yesterday, and, you are right, two houses away across the back yard, someone has a nice big pigeon coop! So, I imagine someone objects to the birds, and is poisoning them. The live birds are not a problem for us, and now it seems we might have an ally fighting the poisoner. So, so far so good. Turns out there are some issues with the C of O anyway, so we’ll see about this house.

It’s possible that some of the live fliers you’re seeing belong to a neighborhood coop. That aside, the safety of your garden soil will be far less the product of poisoned birds, and far more the product of years of dumping, pollution, etc. You can read more at these links, including soil testing at Brooklyn College: http://www.bbg.org/pdf/tipsheets/TestingYourSoil_0512.pdf http://www.brooklyn.cuny.edu/web/academics/centers/esac/services/soil.php I recommend against calling EPA, Health Dept., DSNY, etc. If they discover lead or other toxins in your soil, you will be responsible for extremely expensive remediation process–something you seem willing to undertake on your own.

Phone 311 & get EPA or Sanit to look at it.
