Cost and recs to replace iron waste pipe

Have a licensed and insured plumber come in and look at the pipe since its exposed. As mentioned, pvc works well to code in many applications and is most cost effective. 4ft in a short horizontal run, smaller job. keep in mind though , the rest of the stack should be inspected via infrared and water test even if just replacing a small piece. From experience, there is possibility of multiple leaks top to bottom and when one gets fixed its possible for another to pop up from new pressure in a different area.

HI, We have cracks in a four foot section of the iron waste pipe. It’s the horizontal section that is located at the base of the stack to the upper floors that is in the ceiling of the basement. Has anyone had similar work done? We’re looking for a recommendation of plumber that does this work regularly and approxiate cost. If anyone knows the ballpark cost for replacing the entire stack, that would helpful to know too. Thanks in advance!

Replacing the entire vertical stack from the cellar up through three stories of living space and through the roof cost us $12,000\. We also had a horizontal section of pipe in the cellar replaced (but it wasn’t at a juncture) and that was, if memory serves, somewhere around $450 to $650 (it was five years ago so I’ve forgotten). . Of course I don’t know the condition of your plumbing, but it’s more likely a plumber will recommend replacing just the section that is cracked or the entire horizontal section in the cellar, rather than the vertical stack. But you never know. . We used a plumber that originally started out specializing in drains but now does everything, and other plumbers use them to clean out waste pipes and when they are overly booked. . Unfortunately, I cannot recommend tradespeople because I work for Brownstoner.

As Cate says, replacing a shrt section of that pipe shouldn’t be too expensive and even less if done with PVC, which meets code in many applications. Unless there are leaks visible, the stck is probably fine. You didn’t mention that the section was leaking so I assume it’s a crack along the top. I had one of these and althoug it’s not code and a plumber wioll tell you not to do it, I just used a crack sealer and it has been fine for many years. I think it was called Speed Seal. This was years ago and I’m sure there are better products now.

4 years ago it cost me $950 for cast iron vertical stack from 1st floor kitchen to basement and then about 8 more feet horizontal in the basement. Used Alladin Plumbing.

Try J-B Waterweld, it’s a 2 part epoxy clay. I had a foot long crack running down a cast iron pipe, pushed the clay into the crack; and it doesn’t leak anymore. It’s $6.35 at homedepot.
