sprinkler system requirement in a 4 family house (2 floors)

the last CO is from the 1950s. the house was originally built in 1920s. there is not a sprinkler system in the property now. However, someone told me that the house requires a sprinkler system; being that there are no fire escapes on the second floor. would love to have a conversation with someone that could educate me on this. thank you

thank you so much for your time. 1) 2nd floor does not have a fire escape. I went down to the department of buildings record room. they said they had no files on the house since there was a fire in some warehouse and many files where lost. @resident , there is an attic that can be accessed from the second floor. but then again, no fire escape from the attic either. @maggie_o. thanks for letting me know about the fire escape .

resident2 is correct, i just wanted to add though that if you are planning to do a renovation you WILL need to put in sprinklers as you can no longer add exterior fire escapes to buildings as a 2nd means of egress.

Unless you are making major changes to the use or access & egress the old code continues. You do not need to keep upgrading due to changes in the code. It is called Grandfathered.
Your “Fire Escape” on the 2nd floor is probably the direct roof access. You can check the archives to see if the DOB still has the old plans from when it was approved as a 4 family to see if anything is now missing.
But do not open a whole Pandora’s Box if it is not necessary.
