Our building just had a new steam boiler installed. I’ve attached a photo that shows the pitch of some pipes (the header for instance). I would think that the main header should be level but it’s not. Also, this is a EGH-115 which calls for a 4″ header. Can anyone tell by looking at the photo if that is a 4″ header pipe? The boiler is piped properly with two 3″ risers and into a single 4″ header. The 4″ according to your “⅛” H” markup is also pitched properly and should not be level. The main run at the top of the picture is backpitched, which is not usually a good thing, but may be a part of the design for some reason. You may have to deal with that because it may create some noise. Or maybe not. I’m only seeing a small part of the system.

A follow-up if I may? The “main run” you mention in the photo I assume is where the new black pipe meets the old. From what you can see , is there anything that should have been done (or can be done) with the new pipe to get rid of the backpitch? We are experiencing some water hammer but it’s of course impossible to figure out where it’s coming from by listening but I assume that any pipe pitched improperly is a possible cause.

Yes. What you’ve got there is a section of counterflow main piping. Sometimes it’s unavoidable but there is an additional piping configuration to deal with the developing condensate that allows it safely and quietly drain back to the boiler rather than be pushed up into the system. That’s a quick source of noise right there.
