Anyone done Landmarks Window application one their own?

We’re replacing 8 windows on the front of our brownstone in Fort Greene and to save a bit of dough, the window supplier suggested we could do the Landmarks Preservation Commission application ourselves. Has anyone out there done this?  Any tips? How difficult/easy is it?  Will it add time to the overall process?  In other words, do window suppliers have an inside track on getting applications processed? Quick turnaround is important to us. Thanks!

Do you need landmark approval if you want to change the windows on the back facade (not visible from the street)? Or do you just need a simple DOB permit and a LPC certificate of no effect?

The PDF that cupolacoffee pointed you to is very helpful and important. Look at pages 16-27\. Can you produce a document similar to that? If the answer is yes, then you can proceed on your own. Putting together an application is time consuming. Make sure you have the time and graphic expertise to so.

LPC has issued a new series of application guides. Window application guidelines: http://www.nyc.gov/html/lpc/downloads/pdf/pubs/App_Guide_Windows.pdf
Good installers are experienced with the application process. Be careful with your quick turnaround. Windows should not be purchased until you’ve gotten approval and permit from LPC.

I agree…its not that its a tricky process but you have to go through some paperwork and if your not famililar with what LPC wants it could delay the approval process. You need to submit certain documents, pics, and an explanation of what will be occuring etc. To avoid the hassle it would be best if you hire a GC.

I’m sorry to report that it can be tricky. I understand one needs to submit pretty detailed drawings. Check on nyc.gov where there is a good deal of background information explaining what’s required. I also recommend you call LPC yourself and ask for a staff member to walk you through the process. Although they are short staffed, they do want to help home owners. If, on the other hand, you hire a contractor experienced with LPC applications, it’ll probably be faster. We used EZ-Tilt in Bay Ridge. They do this all the time.
