Slow down, warmsmeallup. I have a little experience with radiant floor heating too. Like 25 years worth from back when Uponor, then Wirsbo, sent me to school for it in Minnesota in 1994. I realize you want to sell your electric mats but my comment was that using a motion sensor to turn it on wouldn’t be prudent, because yes, undeniably, there is a slow reaction time with RFH that doesn’t exist with nearly every other method of space heating. Your description of setback and slab ∆T maintenance is accurate but not prudently controlled by motion.

I wouldn’t want electric resistance heat running 24 hrs a day just so it can be on when you use the bathroom. If the radiant system is on the central boiler then it contributes to the load like any other radiator, and the warm floor is incidental. But the electric floor mat is like running a space heater all day just to warm your feet. The warmup time is too long for on demand use, so you have to guess when you will want it on and schedule the T-stat, or keep the meter running.

If the poster (or anyone else on this list!) wants a free Schluter Ditra heated floor kit, you can have mine for free. I was going to install it in my bathroom in my old law tenement ground-floor apartment when, in the course of uncovering more space by taking down the sheetrock walls that enclosed heating pipes that had been put up during our co-op’s sponsor cheap renovation in the 80’s, my contractor and I realized that enlarging my bathroom meant exposing heating pipes.
My contractor said he didn’t want to install electric heating next to the heating pipes because their heat would throw the Schluter thermostat off.
Fortunately for me, the exposed pipes now heat the bathroom so well that we decided not to install the Schluter after all. The complete kit is now free to a good home & if anyone here wants it, please post & I’ll get it to you!

hey i do not know risks vs rewards, but i sure wish i had thought of electric radiant when we were redoing our bathroom (before it was too late). take the offer from the guy who offered you his, install it and keep traditional heat in there as well. this way you have the choice later.

We did electric underfloor heating in our master bathroom and love, love, love it. Programmable thermostats for mornings and evenings. Would be expensive if run all day but we removed radiator and managed to keep bathroom comfortably warm.

You’re welcome. I meant to add the following (take whatever is helpful)

1. I think someone mentioned this as well. There is a small gadget that you can buy you can buy to check and detect any issues in the heating cable: Warmly Yours SS-01 Floor Heating Circuit Check Continuity Tester https://www.amazon.com/Warmly-SS-01-Heating-Circuit-Continuity/dp/B005D7O05G

2. A good thermostat so you can schedule turn on in advance – the mats do take a while to heat up. Also a nice rug helps while you wait (etsy and west elm have good sized washable cotton mats)

3. Warmly Yours were helpful in laying out the cables. I sent them my plans and they did the layouts which I was able to hand off to my contractor

4. If you haven’t poured the slab, would consider insulating underneath with foam
