Risks vs. Rewards of Switching to Radiant Floor Heat in Bathrooms
We are considering replacing our existing sheet vinyl and wood subfloors in our bathrooms with ceramic tile, which raises the question of whether we should replace the existing hot water heat pipes with radiant floor heat at the same time. The existing heat is working beautifully. The advantage would be to open up space for storage or seating in a garden level hallway by eliminating two awkwardly positioned heat risers there. I am wondering: (1) How long do the radiant systems last and how reliable are they — will we will be tearing up the tile in 10 years when a circuit fails? (2) Will removing the two heat risers affect our existing hot water radiator system? They are a branch line and lead only to those two bathrooms. (3) Anything else I should know about the pros, cons, costs, installation? Thank you!

Does your warranty include labor and the cost of the new tile for 20 years?

Installing radiant floor heat in a bathroom can be viewed 3 ways:
It’s needed to support a primary, insufficient source.
It’s needed as a primary source for heat (requiring a heat load calculation) or,
Strictly from a comfort standpoint.
The first two speak for themselves. If it’s from a comfort point, there’s nothing like stepping out of the shower on to a warm floor or, walking in to the bathroom in the middle of the night to a warm floor. Until you’ve experienced it, it can’t effectively be described. As far as to which system to use, depending on the actual coverage, bathrooms are usually too small to install a boiler/instant-on water source over just using an electric system with a thermostat and in-floor sensor.
Then it’s a question of whether you also want to heat the shower floor/seat as well. When heating in the shower or the shower seat, we only recommend a low voltage system. Otherwise, the standard roll out 120 or 240v mat or spooled cable will work fine, depending on the design and layout.
Someone in this thread spoke to what you can do wit h the circuit if it fails. If you buy a reputable product with a solid warranty, the system will only fail if someone’s not careful during installation of the system or the tile over the top. The systems we supply and /or install come with minimally a 20-year, non-prorated warranty.

One tip I’ve seen is to be sure to install a backup temp sensor in the floor of electric mat systems. Sounds like that is more likely to fail than the mat itself, and by having wires for a second sensor available if the first sensor fails at any time, you can just switch over without needing to figure out another way to mount a replacement sensor under your tiled floor.

Well it shouldn’t cost much to put it in, and if it goes out in a few years, you can put an electric towel warmer on the circuit. I’d try to put it on some kind of timer or motion sensor switch so you don’t waste a ton of electricity.

We were thinking an electric mat, yes. (No wall space to bury risers.) Glad to know they’ve been performing well for Slopefarm. Anyone know how long these systems can be expected to last? Seems like a potential heap of trouble down the road.

We did what MP suggests in 2 bathrooms and we are very happy with it. 13 years and counting. The bathrooms get a lot of ambient heat from the house, so a gentle lift and slightly warm floor in the winter from electric radiant heat is really all you need.

Where is the bathroom, does it actually need a heat source? It sounds like the plan is electric if the goal is to eliminate the risers. Could you route the risers through the wall? It might be possible to fish up an insulated pex run.

with a bathroom midship in a brownstone, radiant floor heat can be an awkward fit, as evinced by the OP’s comment re the risers…..As MP said , electric floor matsvcan be the way to go…Schulter is testate of the art system

My opinion is that if you’re going to do one bathroom with radiant floor heating, you might as well go with underfloor electric mats. I know that’s sacrilege to many in the heating industry but sometimes it just makes most economic sense.

Radiant Heat is my personal preference for any type of heat; even as a company that focuses on Steam Heat. It is tough to push to others though because it is so invasive; seems like a good chance for you through.
Consult with a professional if you are not one. Hydronic Heat is not like Steam Heat that is based upon radiator calculation but removing and adding lines can throw off the Heat Loss or Circulation Threshold for your system.
