How to prevent people from throwing dog poop in your compost bin?!
Thanks everyone for the tips! So far I’ve put a “no poop” sign on the lid and it’s been okay so far (finger crossed). Just have to be a bit more diligent bringing the bin inside as early as we can in the morning.

Little Pea – Sorry, I didn’t see your follow-up posts explaining your situation further. Ignore what I wrote. Does the DSNY leave your bin outside on the street? You may also want to complain to the DSNY since you’re not the only person with this problem. They may have a solution, though I doubt it. Still the more people complain, the more likely they will have to address it.

I just read back here after olodaf wrote what he did. this is what I would do. I would ask sanitation if they can leave your cans upside down when they empty them. as I said above, I sometimes have to toss a snack wrapper in the trash and at the first inconvenience, I move on to the next bin. the people doing this will not turn your trash cans back over for you.
also, have you tried calling sanitation? supposedly there are rules on this (per Maggie). years ago, someone was walking their very big dog along the front of an abandoned commercial building in the winter. I would walk by on my way to work, passing disgusting mounds of old poo and the steaming fresh poo left in the snow. I called sanitation; they must have staked someone out there from 6 AM on and watch because within days, the problem stopped. it started again, I called again, and it stopped and the second time it stopped for good.
keep in mind sanitation has their own police officers and because they have to justify their existence more so than other city employees, they might be on this like flies on ……

and by the way, the sanitation workers themselves are very easy to approach. it is not like approaching other city employees who are nagged by the public all day long. if you start talking to them or ask a favor, they will listen and they will remember you.
