How to prevent people from throwing dog poop in your compost bin?!

Thanks everyone for the tips! So far I’ve put a “no poop” sign on the lid and it’s been okay so far (finger crossed). Just have to be a bit more diligent bringing the bin inside as early as we can in the morning.

I am appalled that people pick up and try to dispose of their dog poop in actual trash receptacles made for that purpose. You just can’t win….. why can’t they just be like the rest of NYC and leave it on the sidewalk??? (and no I don’t do this, but have you lived anywhere else in the city?)

It happened on trash pickup day so I can’t lock it unfortunately, otherwise DSNY won’t be able to empty it. It’s really annoying because it’s after DSNY emptied the bin (which only happens once per week) and this a-hole threw their dog poop in my clean bin before I can collect it in the morning.

dorkofwinsor, first of all, compost bin are not for litter/poop. Second, it’s my private property and not for public use! For your own dog crap, you should use the corner bins provided by the city or just take it home with you. My bin is only outside because it’s trash collection day, not because I want everyone to use it.

I have this problem all the time and it drives me crazy. Dog poop strinks and the smell lingers in the bin for days. I don’t have dogs in the city for a reason: it’s a lousy environment for them. Look, I love dogs. My mom raised guide dogs for the blind (German Shepherds) from puppies for 40 years so I know a thing or two about about them. Too many city dog owners are anthropomorphic fools who know nothing about these wonderful animals and further more believe their rights as pet owners out-weigh the rights of bipeds to enjoy clean streets, blooming front yards, and tree pits with spring bulbs. The next person who tells me their darling pup can only pee in a green space…. Your dog will pee anywhere you train it to pee and that includes the gutter, you moron!!

Dorkofwinsor, you’re obviously not a homeowner who has to deal with this. First of all, the bag they used was not biodegradable. Second, the label on the compost box clearly stated no pet wastes. And finally, poop that stays in the bin for an entire week stinks (especially during summer) and attracts other pests, like flies and mosquito, which cause diseases. We have small children and they’re already enough to deal with. Last thing I want is to deal with more cleanup after other people and their dogs.

Could you build a garbage shed and use a lock? I see quite a few brownstones and buildings with wooden trash sheds that are used for regular trash and recyclables. Most have locks on them. Perhaps you can build or purchase one small enough for your compost bin.
