Electric Bill kWh usage is double what I usually use in new apt
A long time ago I rented an “owners unit” that was subsequently rented out – I unknowingly paid for the building electricity common charges for years. Great landlords at below market rent – I didn’t care because I was still net positive. Long story short – they voluntarily put in a new meter for those circuits after realizing the issue on their own. But yeah, this can be a thing.

Alright… I talked to CONed again… they recommend getting an electrician over here to check out what’s doing the damage and to check out the wiring of the apt. He said that maybe faulty wiring could be generating more electricity than we are using….
On another note, we moved our fridge and there was tons of dust on the coils which we’ve cleaned. Maybe this will help?

If you have a analog meter there’s a spinning disk inside it, if it stops spinning, that means no electricity is being used… If it’s a digital meter, there are 3 bars on the right side that light up one after the other if anything is being used, if theres no bars, everything is off.

Thats what I thought about my digital meter. That it would zero out while nothing was in use- but the numbers stayed on. Not sure how many hrs I should have waited with everything shut down to see if the numbers don’t go up.

Just checked mine, on the lower left side of the screen, it says delivered and there’s a triangle symbol that beeps on and off, if you don’t see the triangle beeping, then nothing is drawing a current.

Just remember that there are a lot of vampire devices that use electricity when they are off such as the TV, DVR,Microwave oven, gas stove, etc. They all have to be unplugged.

I know about the vampire appliances- but my personal ones are the same. That’s what’s leading me to believe it’s whatever was already in the apartment that is either inefficient or rigged or wired wrong.

Also ConEd has a home energy calculator where you can try to pinpoint what device might be using a lot of electricity. https://www.coned.com/en/save-money/estimate-your-energy-usage

I suspect fridge too. We cleaned the coils (they were filthy)
I did the home energy calculator and the estimate was on point with my estimated 175 ish kWH usage.

If you are paying for electric water heating, it could explain the difference.

A friend in a small Brooklyn apartment building was also having the problem of seemingly high electric bills. One day he overloaded the electrical circuit for his apartment accidentally and discovered that the hallway lights were also out, besides eveything in his apartment. Turns out that the buildings utiliites were on his meter. Especialy in older & smaller buildings this might be a problem. In addition I suggest that you not only speak to Con Ed but insist that they pay a visitt and check on the accuracy of the meter in question. Besides screwed up wiring, the meter itself might not be working properly. Also there are inexpensive devices (kil-a-watt is one, if I have the spelling right) that measure electical usage for individual appliances which would be a helpful dignostic tool to help pinpoint any appliance problems.

We don’t pay for electric water heating- it’s all gas from a boiler billed via National
grid.
We went through every switch in our circuit breaker and nothing in the common area was affected. Con ed also said landlord has a common area account that he is billed for. I saw the kill a watt- I’m going to order it.

It’s pretty common for electricians working in smaller buildings to wire into whatever junction box is nearby, regardless of which apartment’s account it is. When I bought my house (then a 3-family) I found the tenants were paying for parts of each other’s apartments, but ALL of the refrigerators were wired to the “common areas” account that the landlord (me) pays, which is a commercial rate, and is a much higher rate than residential rates. For your case, if you turn off your ENTIRE breaker box, does anyone else in the building mention an outage somewhere? If so, you immediately know the cause of your added costs.

Interesting. Our building is a small 3 floor building with one apartment per floor. It was gut renovated around 2006-2008. It seems really well taken care of (I’ve lived in a variety of places! ) and the landlord seems honest. But that aside- something sketchy is going on. We shut off all the breakers at night and didn’t notice other lights in the other units cutting off (that we could see) but maybe we didn’t cut off long enough for anyone to notice something like a fridge. The breaker box was decently labeled and there seemed to be some sort of logic in the wiring (for ex. All AC outlets in one, all other outlets in another etc ) I want to see if there’s a way to keep better track of my usage now that my fridge coils are cleaned… but would hate to go through another pay cycle.
I am going Out of town for 8 days in July and was thinking of shutting things off while I’m gone and seeing what happens. But I still want to hire an electrician to evaluate what’s going on here.

When you go out of town next month, it may be a good idea to have a relative or friend keep an eye on your apartment. The landlord may be doing something illegal here, and may enter your apartment while you are away to restore the power. The reason being you are probably paying for the entire building.

I’ve also heard it said that the digital meters are more accurate than the old analog ones, could be that nothing nefarious is going on and that it is what it is.
