Electric Bill kWh usage is double what I usually use in new apt
A long time ago I rented an “owners unit” that was subsequently rented out – I unknowingly paid for the building electricity common charges for years. Great landlords at below market rent – I didn’t care because I was still net positive. Long story short – they voluntarily put in a new meter for those circuits after realizing the issue on their own. But yeah, this can be a thing.

Check the meter number against your bill.
We had a small project where the meters were mislabeled one floor was paying for the other.

It’s my meter according To my bill and to Con Ed. They even said this was the lowest they had seen the bill. Which is bizarre! I can see the other meters from the other apartments and ours have the lowest numbers. But something is def up…
The meter has gone up 4kwh every 3 days since our meter reading on June 12. Not sure how normal or abnormal that is.
We have some halogen bulbs that were already installed from some lighting fixtures. We will be changing those this week.

Another possibility……. maybe in your old apartment, part of your wiring was attached to a different meter

Based on my experience, it seems to me electrical bills are higher in houses with modern to code electrical systems and lower in houses with systems dating from the early 20th century. In the many floor through apartments I have lived in, the bills were always very low ($40 or so a month) if the system was old with few outlets and low volt service even if we had an old energy sucking fridge. In the two floor-through apartments I’ve lived in that had whole-house upgraded electrical to current code with a minimum of three outlets per room and 220 service, the bills were always around $100 a month. When we did a whole house electrical upgrade, the bills jumped, including for a floor-through apartment. All of this was without air conditioning. Wonder if any electrical experts could chime in on why this might be. Does Con Ed charge more for 220 volt service or do upgraded systems use more power even if the appliances are the same?

I still feel like we haven’t determined definitively (on this forum) whether the meter still records activity when all of your breakers are off. Take a look at the numbers on the meter (and the small dots or triangles below) to get an idea of how quickly they’re changing, then turn off everything and wait the same amount of time. If the number changes then you know the issue is you’re connected to something else, but if it doesn’t then you know it’s in your place (barring some strange configuration). Otherwise, you may want to invest in a device like a Neurio or similar that tracks individual device usage. We got one and it helped track down the energy hogs in our place.

@cate this could make sense. I did live in a pretty old building, and this one was gut renovated at least 8 years ago max. It’s a floor through and there are outlets
everywhere.
@jhcovert so I turned off all
My breakers and it seemed like no common areas (lights) were affected. We sat for like an hour and didn’t see any changes in the meter. Not sure how long we should wait to see if there’s a change. We also unplugged everything for like an hour as well and waited and there was no change. Of course idk if an hour is enough time to expect a number increase. What I have been able to track is that every 3 days the usage increases by 4kwh. I will try again in the next couple of days to shut everything down when we leave for a few hours and make note of the numbers and report back!

If the usage goes up 4 kwh every 3 days, doesn’t that mean you use 40 kwh each month, not 300-400?

Jrkeat yea- but this has just been with me monitoring since our last meter reading on June 12. So I’m only 2 readings into it… hoping to find a pattern and a spike as the month progresses. As I mentioned, our house is pretty much vacant and turned off for at least 8 hrs 4-5 days of the week. So maybe the spike will happen over the weekend ?♀️

I would definitely think you’d see a change in an hour of no usage. Cate might be onto something. A device like I mentioned could help you sniff out the culprit if you are serious about getting to the bottom of it, and based on our experience, when we switched from halogens to LEDs we saw a BIG difference in our bills.

To emphasize the point about bulbs–if you have chandeliers, halogens lights, torchierre stand lights and all that using halogen or incandescent bulbs, they just chew up electricity. Like a chandelier with a dozen 40 watt bulbs is consuming 480 watts when on, so if you leave that on 4 hours a night for 30 days that’s almost 60 kWH/month alone. That’s one fixture. A lot of halogens are high wattage–relatives have a half dozen ceiling lights that are 1,000 watts each when not dimmed, which is the same as running 6 microwave ovens non-stop.
So see what high-wattage items you may have. Anything that heats (bulbs, coffee makers, microwaves) are culprits. You can calculate how much they use in a month using this: https://www.rapidtables.com/calc/electric/watt-to-kwh-calculator.html

Do you unplug your refrigerator during that time. Your refrigerator–especially since it’s not energy star certified– is most likely the largest user of electricity in your apartment.

Of course I assume that you checked your bills and that they are not estimated. Estimated (versus actual) means that Con Ed was not able to gain access to read the meter, and the bill is based on estimates from (in your case) the PRIOR tenant’s usage history (since stimated readings can sometimes go on for months).

While it seems unlikely, check to see if you are inadvertently signed up for an ESCO providing your power (and Con Ed is just charging you for infrastructure). Most ESCOs are rip-offs and charges can be a lot higher than Con Ed.

UPDATE! Con edison came over today to inspect my apt- and indeed my meter is still running while my breakers are shut off. We are definitely paying for something that we are not using.

Ah-ha! Now comes the exciting detective work – figuring out what else is tapped into your lines! Good luck and thanks for the update.
