Shouldn’t take much to install it. Not sure what the relevance is between the window and the brick building… I would do it. Call me at 347-276-6528 Levi SoHoAppliances

I ordered custom shutters online from www.theshutterstore.com & LOVE them!  Not sure what the price difference is, but there were a ton of colors/finishes & I was able to full customize them.

oil prices went up an average $1 per gallon from 2009 to 2012, gas prices dropped. one gallon of oil contains 140.000 BTU,  so 100,000 btu @ 4.00 per gallon  costs 2.85, and gas for 100,000 btu cost 1.50\. it is $1,35 per 100,000 BTU  difference. if house oil  bill on is $4,000 a year , it means $1,895 were overpaid due to oil as heating fuel. with todays oil price ( lets not pay attention it is skyrocketing)  extra cost for gas boiler would be paid off in a 2,9 years. so $6,500 oil boiler costs today $12,000 already, and cost keeps on rising with acceleration.

If you get a new boiler, be sure to have a chimney expert check it is the right size for the chimney, even if you stick with oil. If you switch to gas, the chimney will probably have to be resized.

I got a quote for $12,000 for an oil to gas conversion in 2009\. We stuck with oil; the new oil boiler and installation cost us $6,500.

Oil to gas conversion prices are dependent on the boiler being installed. This is due to the big price difference in the equipment and the labor it takes to install new equipment properly. That being said, a straight cast iron steam or hydronic boiler conversion for a small house should cost somewhere around $15,000 to be done right. Could be more could be a little less, but that is the midpoint. Be very careful of anything lower than $12,000\. Very careful…..There are a lot of shlockos out there.

Many of us remember when gas was more expensive then oil. That was pre-fracking, but don’t count on anything.

Thank you for your answers.  I actually have researched the type of boiler that will be installed and many of your other  points although I am not well versed enough to have known to ask everything you suggest.  If you actually read my comment carefully you would see that the $5500 was the cost of a simple boiler replacement, I did not say I was looking for this price for the work we need done, obviously a conversion would cost more.  If gas doubles in price it is still extremely unlikely that it will cost more than oil as oil will increase as well.

ask following questions:
is job filed with DOB?
heat loss done and boiler sized up to the house? ask for heatloss printout and EDR survey. what contractor will do if radiators are much bigger then house needed?

Will oil tank being removed along with all piping, fill, vent, and oil line?
Will mixing valve  be installed, along with thermoloop, expantion tank, valves and gages?
Will they do cleaning of existing system?
If steam boiler is quoted, will near boiler piping be replaced as per manufacturers specifications??
If steam boiler is quoted, will near boiler piping be insulated?
will manual reset low water cutoff be installed?
Will manual reset pressuretroll be installed?
will chimney lining be done with double wall stainless steel lining?
will existing gas lines be tested?
will new boiler be mounted on the cinderblocks or on concrete pad?
Will shut off valve be installed on boiler outlet and inlet?
will boiler be skimmed after installation?
There  more questions to ask as well.

I’m not sure if the rebate is factored in or not.  Our neighbors just got a new boiler, that was just a replacement and it was $5500 so I was thinking that $8900 for what we need done wasn’t unreasonable but then I was told it shouldn’t cost nearly that much so I’m in a quandary.  Was your quote for the entire job including tank removal?  I’ve been told tank removal alone runs $1000.

I just got a quote yesterday in the same ballpark.  I was always told the conversion would be approx. $5,000.  I was a little shocked by the price.  Did the company account for the national grid rebate?

Thanks for all the usefull information. hdbklyn,  Any chance to talk about the cost? Anybody has any recommendation of a good contractor? If you had any bad experience with any local contractor, can you also share the information?

hdbklyn, I’m interested to know what that system cost. No need to comment publicly, I’m at heat@moltenmechanical.com if you care to favor me with your reply.

I’ve got the Mitsubishi City Multi installed in my 3 story brownstone in Carroll Gardens. Configured as follows: Top floor, 2 x 9K units, one recessed cassette unit in each bedroom. Parlor floor, 2 x 12K concealed units one for the kitchen and one for south facing living room. Garden level, 1 x 18K concealed ducted unit in cellar ducted up from below. This system works great. Since the top two floors get more sun, the extra zones help deal with south vs north orientation and load in the kitchen. The garden level has a lower ceiling and doesn’t get nearly as much sun. I have the heat pump system and it works very well in the winter as well. The cellar unit has a suplemental heater for the coldest days (didn’t use it at all last year) usually kicks on only 5 or six times per winter. Some additional info about my set up. We are the corner house so we have an exposed side wall with a large bay window. Condenser unit on roof. Our wintertime heating cost is a wash compared to gas fired forced air in 2008, though I suspect that I’m no longer saving over gas. Significant summertime savings over running window units.

I am familiar with the Fujitsu concealed unis, which allow two ducts out the sides, but I never trusted the pump based condensate arrangement. I have blown out too many condensate tubes to think that someday it will clog and you will have water damagein your ceiling and…Better a gravity feed drain downa wall. Less chance of failure, less consequences if it does.

Thanks for your responses! I was interested in the concealed units, and I one unit per floor.  Someone did a calculation a while back and recommended: – 24k on the top floor and kitchen/parlor – 16k on the bedroom floor and garden rental.   Any comments on that?

dean5th, We have many years of experience installing these systems. Although every home has it’s differences, you can expect the following in a typical 4 floor brownstone.   Top floor bedrooms – 9kBTUs per room unless the roof/crawlspace is uninsulated, if so, then mayyyyybe 12 kBTUs 2nd Floor – 9 kBTUs /bedroom   Parlor/1st Floor – Big variances here. Mayyyybe a 24 kBTU unit for the entire floor but I don’t really like that. I would prefer an 18 kBTU in the kitchen area and a 9 or 12 kBTU in the Living Room.   Garden Floor would be the same as the Parlor wiuth more of a lean toward the 18 + 9 kBTU combo.   There will be at least two condensers for this system and I will undersize them and not tell you why in public 😉 This will cost over $30,000\. If you have budgeted for such a system please feel free to contact us. Info is found in my profile. Best of luck to you.

The answer to the Dakin versus other name brands – it’s basically a tie. When we attended Fujitsu training a few weeks ago, I walked away thinking how much better Fujitsu is than the others, and that’s all we’re going to install from now on. They are more efficient, but more complex. So you take your chances.
