I ended up going with Lucky Window Products (LWP). They installed Trimline’s – wood interior, alu-clad exterior. We haven’t had a single problem with these windows and they look beautiful (we opted to have them painted at the factory). Highly recommend the Trimlines and Robert Basile at LWP, at least for the rear window installation. We have Marvins on the first floor and I can honestly say, I can’t really tell the difference in looks or quality. If anything, the Trimlines are easier to open.

We have the Aira retractable screen door. One of the best things we’ve ever bought for the house — in the warmer months it transforms our rear parlor/kitchen/dining room. Bought it from LWP in Sunset Park: 5401 3rd Ave @ 54th St. 718-492-7774\. Can’t say I loved them (unfriendly, slow) but they got the job done.

I have mixed views on Home depot. Consider this: Home depot subcontracts ALL their work. You’re pretty much hiring Home Depot to do consulting work. Now, There are some large window/glazing companies in the US that can give you some better estimates. They can give you some prices for the windows themselves, and you can hire a local contractor to install. I found out my aunt and uncle recently remodeled their kitchen through Home depot. In the end, they paid too much. I highly recommend EZBZ though. I find it very convenient and plus local and reputable contractors reply to you (once you post an inquiry through the site).

I’m not familiar with these windows. Just be aware you’ll need a permit from Landmarks for replacing your windows which will likely involve drawings. Window specialists are more likely to be able to help you with this than Home Depot.

Yes! We’ve had ours for almost a year now. LOVE THEM. We have (3) 4×8 windows, so we installed 2 panels per window (with a divider in the middle). My dealings with everyone at Indow have been fantastic and the dealer/installer we used in NJ was also fantastic.

I have a weird application where I researched interior storms. Indow turned out to be one of the best out there but I wound up having something custom made and cheaper locally, but not in NYC. There’s also energywisemfg.com and a few others if you google interior storm windows but indow looked to have a quality product.

I have not tried the interior storm windows, but we put up plastic every year with tape and it works amazingly well. (Looks like hell of course.) It even helped this year, even though we have brand new windows. Go figure. So I think any kind of window covering is a plus. Curtains too.

Cate, we had original windows with storms (installed by a previous owner) and it was not working for us. We had all the windows replaced with Marvins (landmarked and wanted the wood inside, warranty). The difference is substantial. The house is so much easier to keep a certain temperature (we were especially having trouble in the winters). Don’t kick yourself too much for not going with the storms. I also like not having to raise and lower storm windows. Granted, our originals were in very rough condition, but the storms were hardly doing anything to improve energy efficiency.

I am building a new house, and it’s very difficult to get windows that have the extreme insulation properties requested nowadays. Crystal was able to do match that, and they painted the outside brown and kept the inside white for me. I am not a builder, but they were nice to me and my one million questions on the phone. I also spoke to professional windows sellers, and they had to agree that for this price, nobody can match the quality. Windows came with mosquito nets, which i didnt even request. Eventually, i also always try to deal with things locally.
