In addition to loving the look of antique wavy glass windows, I was also persuaded to keep mine after reading a bunch of industry reports on replacement windows that raised issues about their durability. I may have spent $100-200 per window on restoration, but they look great, operate perfectly, and do a terrific job of insulating when combined with a storm window.

I figure I’d rather restore them every 140 years, then replace them every 20.

i am surprised these kind of things are still around. i would have thought they fell out of favor when double pane windows came into being. we had them here and ripped them out when the new windows went in.

We did this and it was not crazy expensive. Less than the 20-30K that is suggested above if memory serves. However, it was part of a larger house project so i am not 100% sure on the price. One thing i do STRONGLY RECOMMEND, is that you install a check valve while the basement is open (see my post above). This will greatly help with potential flooding.

Depends but done right 20-30k —also please note this requires permits, and engineering which add costs, or you could easily collapse your building or the neighbors (or the block) if you dig down and your foundation doesn’t go deep enough. We did what you’re saying, and first needed to have cores done of the ground to make sure the soil is appropriate and that the foundation goes low enough. To drop a foot you’d need to dig out at least 1.5 feet so you can put back in insulation, gravel, vapor barrier and 3-4 inches of concrete.

i would go back an try to understand what has gone wrong with Crystal that some on here have complained about them and see if you can make them work for you. i installed two of them on either side of another kind of aluminum window in the 1990’s and we had no issues and i know they have behaved as they should because i am still in touch with the owner. i have a friend who knows a lot about different window manufacturers and will ask more when i talk to him; he will know the name of another manufacturer. i am worried that some of these manufacturers may be more regional, so it may be hard to find one.

Thanks for the suggestions. Unfortunately I can’t remove the molding or window frames, they have to be stripping in place.

Does anyone have experience with De Gamba stripping? They are the only place that has replied with a quote so far.

ok, was just on facebook and it pushed an add up in front of me for a Laser that can be used to strip rust from metal. no chemicals, no mess. i am going to buy one. i was thinking about what dork said and was wondering who blasts in the city (unless they have a cabinet and i used to have a small one) as the sand ends up all over the place.

sarah, you just said something key: “certified dealers”. when you buy the lower end stuff, the product is cheaper and the manufacturers probably don’t care who puts them in (I put them in for someone in the ’90’s and was not technically running a business and the person who sold me the windows did not give a toss if I screwed it up). if you go with the better product, they will only sell to a certified installer and that is because they do not want the warranty claims. and look at the others piping in about crystal and other cheap windows, we did it here and I am ok with them but if I was in a house with real potential, I would never. even though those certified installers cost more, they have more skin in the game and are another level of tradesperson; the job will go smooth. it is easy to install windows when things go well, but it is also easy to screw them up.
