To elaborate a little – all-wood windows would share #1 in terms of quality but come with the headache of maintenance & repainting every 3 or 4 years. And any alum. clad window is going to be better than an all alum. window.

In order of preference: 1\. Aluminum clad wood windows – if you can get a good price on these, this is what you want. Without going ultra high end, you can’t get much better than Marvin. Pella, Weathershield, etc. are all lower quality. 2\. Mahogany or Douglass Fir wood windows, 3\. Thermally-broken aluminum windows. The rest is barbershop raga.

I just finished replacing some windows in my house and used the Marvin Ultrex. They have recently redesigned their windows with several new features. They have cladding on the outside to make them relatively carefree but inside is wood. This way they can be painted/stained to match your interior. The wood is warmer in winter. I used Dineen Construction to install the windows – they are excellent and since nothing is square in these houses this is very tricky. There is a noticeable noise reduction with these new windows and I am hoping also, less draft as it gets colder. Whoever you use, make sure they insulate around the windows well.

For the front of my house I replaced all my windows with Marvin wood-ultrex combination windows. Ultrex is a fiberglass product for the exterior portion of the window, but they are wood on the interior for a more traditional look. https://www.marvin.com/integrity/windows/wood-ultrex-double-hung For the rear of my house I went with Marvin Ultimate casement windows since casement windows offer superior noise reduction and insulation properties and they are building a school behind my house. Update 2 months later: After filing a police report the detective received camera footage and it was confirmed that it wasn’t ME who took out the money. It was a big struggle to even file a police report because no one would believe me. And even more confusing, I had to claim it with CITI about 4 times which took hours and hours on the phone until they refunded the money for good.

Thanks everyone for their replies. We have a few quotes from a couple of places, we still are getting familiar with all the window brands. We are leaning towards having aluminum on the outside and wood on the inside. Im wondering if anyone has Trimline windows. Wood on the inside and aluminum on the outside? Also anyone used LWP for windows and installation?

To say vinyl or aluminum is not enough information, it depends on the quality of each and most importantly the installation. I have seen some contractors royally screw up some quality windows, rendering them virtually useless. Vinyl windows of 10-15 years ago are not as good as some available today and aluminum windows are all insulated today, unless you are buying really cheap. This is not the time of year to make desperate decisions about windows. Patch & insulate the ones you have and meet with as many “Window” contractors as you can over the next few weeks to get ready for making a good decision down the road. Windows are a major investment, not just for insulation but also aesthetics.
