Shouldn’t take much to install it. Not sure what the relevance is between the window and the brick building… I would do it. Call me at 347-276-6528 Levi SoHoAppliances

Ricardo Ironworks made mine, custom size, installed, interchangeable storm window and screens. I am very happy with it. He used to be on Third Avenue, I think the shop is on Bond Street now.

I own a brownstone on the UWS (sorry but not a Brooklyn brownstone owner) and have used this site for information. I have looked at many different window manufacturers (the top are Marvin, Pella and the lesser known Kolbe) and after a long and very detailed process I decided on Kolbe wood windows. For top quality wood windows, it was a decision between Marvin and Kolbe and Kolbe won. I had a brick to brick installation done for the 5 floors of my brownstone (15 windows with the parlour floor windows being over 90 inches tall)). The installation was done just 2 months ago (Aug2011) and Kolbe did everything right. The windows were well wrapped and delivered with no damage. The installation took a week and everything was done to my satisfaction by vendor/installer (a rep from the Kolbe distributor inspected the job and had vendor/installer correct some issues). Since it has only be a short time since the installation, I can only say that Kolbe windows look solid and I have had no problem to date. The issue maybe with vendor/installer (for jparness). I learned it makes a HUGE difference if you are properly serviced (which includes proper installation).

You have examples of the original stoop on neighboring houses right in your picture. In Brooklyn we would just rebuild the stoop with cinderblock and the cement mixture noted above with one major exception. It’s been decades since I heard of anyone using pigment. The color is attained by the use of brownstone sand.

I’ve got a Stiebel that I love. My family and I go through a TON of hot water and we’ve never had any issues with running out. My plumber also said he’d seen great success with them when he installed it.

Does it have to be stone? If not I think this might be a nice alternative – http://www.steptoewife.com/staircaseModel.php?staircaseID=4&type=specifications Cast iron stoops like this seem to be much more common in places like Georgetown and Charleston.

Most “brownstone” stoops in Brooklyn today have only remnants of underlying original stone, rebuilt with mixtures of Portland cement, sand, lime, crushed aggregate and mica, and added pigment. For someone knowledgeable about conservation and brownstone repair try contacting Ivan Myjer (his website is not informative, but this is among his specialties): http://bit.ly/mYQAJ1

Simon’s doesn’t have them – I just called. Anyone know of a source for the bottom metal rail/track/guide only? To clarify, it’s a long metal strip that gets nailed to the floor and has a ridge on it that sticks up and guides the door, no rollers or wheels.

Try Simon’s Harware in the city.

You’re throwing me off, in that the track is above and wouldn’t get “kicked”

I always buy from COD Fuel. On their website they list about 7 or 8 companies that they “compare” for you and you can select the cheapest fuel on the list, pay and schedule the delivery on the site. I have a feeling, though, that maybe I am getting scammed somehow, but I have not had a problem yet. COD probably gets a cut. Anyone know how this company’s system works?
