Shouldn’t take much to install it. Not sure what the relevance is between the window and the brick building… I would do it. Call me at 347-276-6528 Levi SoHoAppliances

Another vote for Vila Window repair. I had them out a few weeks ago to replace a missing chain on one of our large 4×8 double-hung windows. The job was done quickly and the price was substantially better than every other bid we got (our co-op made us get bids from several of their preferred vendors since they were reimbursing us for the repair and all of their vendors quoted us $100+ over what Vila did the job for.)

I sold many GE units last summer. People seemed very happy with them compared to Frigidaire and Friedrich. The Friedrich Kuhl units are far better than the standard Friedrich units that are made in China. They are an investment. Quite often air conditioners that are not properly installed can make noise. I bought 2 GE’s 3 years ago and while they cool well, I would not call them quiet, which is a major irritant. Freidrich seems to be quieter (note they are much heavier than other units, which no doubt accounts for the quietness,) and only somewhat more expensive. Kuhl’s are ridiculously overpriced, would like to know if there’s any advantage to them?

Go for a Friedrich or even better a GE. Fedders is not what it used to be. They are made by Airtemp which is garbage. GE is a really good buy. Friedrich is over rated unless you are buying a Kuhl unit. Levi Capland

As the OP I will say that I recieved quotes form Histocial Windows as well. Their quote to do 7 of the 13 (the landmarked front) windows brick to brick, and 6 rear windows as insert windows was about 4% more than I paid to do all 13 brick to brick.

Yes, it was Historical Windows. They specialize in Marvins. We have a vinyl-clad wood house, so they may have been including some changes to the vinyl in their estimate. In addition, they planned to do all the installation from the outside, so their estimate also included removing and reinstalling the historic black iron window bars on the first floor.

I met with Marc from Citiquiet, whom I believe is the owner or part-owner. I’m coming up to the end of my 2 month lead time on some odd-sized windows, so i’ll be happy to report back on the quality of work and the windows, but I can say that Marc was both timely and very nice to deal with. Answered my questions knowledgeably, and didn’t try to push the sale (we were on the fence about the large parlor windows, and wound up not including those in the project at this time, though he did give us a rough quote on them. Didn’t offer any of the “one time pricing” deals, or anything like that, which i appreciate (unfortunately, it’s the norm, it seems, to upsell at every chance, even when un-necessary) Be aware that there’s a lengthy lead time unless you have a window size he or his suppliers stock regularly. Mine was 8 weeks, but the parlor windows would have been closer to 3 months. When i get those done, i’ll keep that in mind and plan accordingly. (ie: don’t do it in the fall -lol) Also there are several options, and they were patient in explaining the pros and cons of each approach. Sorry i can’t be of more help yet – can just give a people-experience on citiquiet. I’ll report back about the actual windows.

Pretty sure I need to do something like this as well, but I can vouch for using plenty of silicone spray and also wiping away as much filth as you can from the channels and seals. Silicone works wonders on how smoothly and easily they open & close.

Nilso – how did it work out for you? Any recomendations? Everyone I talk to wants to sell me new windows. They don’t seem to hear me when I say: I want to restore the old ones.

devenco I am Wayne Austin at Americana. We have fabricated many pocket shutters for the townhouses in Brooklyn replicating the original shutters. The hinging pattern is backwards from any other shutter application. The louvered panel (inner panel) folds over top of the flank panel. The flank panel is hinged open face ‘barrel back’ on the edge of the shutter and the face of the window jamb. It is necessary for the flank panel to be exactly the width of the pocket minus the diameter of the barrel of the hanging hinge and allowances. Installation is a moderate task since the shutters must align it 2 perpendicular planes. The total width of the shutters must match the width of the pocket on the front. There are photographs and a good animated cross section diagram on our web site www.shutterblinds.com that show details. Go to the pocket shutter page of the web site. You are welcome to call if I can help by phone. 800 269 5697
