Advice re Alarm Systems

Surveillance cameras intimidate thieves so these can act as deterrents. Motion lights also scare thieves away very effectively…it seems that they don’t like light for some reason lol they also don’t like loud noises so a good and LOUD burglar alarm will send running.   A dog is a major deterrent! Though, I would consider this as a last resort because I don’t want to risk my dog’s safety.

Our home insurance requires that we get an alarm system. I am wondering whether to just get the bare bones system or go with the motion detectors, sensors on lots of windows, etc. Has anyone researched what features of alarm systems (if any) actually deter thieves from entering or scare them away once they are there? Or do alarm systems just give a false sense of security? Are there statistics or well-researched articles out there, or other sources of reliable information? We’re in a row house in Windsor Terrace, FWIW.

Get your Community CPOP officer from your local precinct to come look at your home.  Mine told me the most important things were perimeter & internal automatic lighting, ‘stops’ on windows & decent locks on doors.  He said that alarms were the last item to do although decals saying you’re protected are helpful.  The main point he made is that your house look like more of a problem than the ones around you.

i can speak from personal experience that the alarm system I had just installed in my house scared out thieves who had broken in through the roof hatch.  They ran straight through the house and out the front door.  I have an internal motion detector, sensors and good locks on all the doors, on the windows accessible from the street, and the roof hatch.  False alarms and the subsequent calls from the alarm company are annoying, though. I am sure the stickers help, too.

??? You should go with motion detectors, sensors, etc. These are definitely going to deter thieves. ??? You should go for a system that has motion detection sensors because they keep intruders away. However, with this kind of system, false alarms would be unavoidable. ??? I have a security system at home. I also have 4 cameras. You should, too, because it???s really effective. ??? You should really get an alarm system. But make sure that the one you???re going to use is an excellent one. Is there a particular type of alarm system that you???re interested in?
