This one’s a real head-scratcher: Scaffolding’s down at 869 Pacific, revealing an, ahem, interesting facade indeed. Two different types of brick on the top floor and an orange hue on bottom. We’ve been seeing a lot of colorful touches on buildings recently—think they liven up the neighborhood or look too out of place?

  1. this technique is very common in old europe. many of the homes/churches kept adding on to the building as time passed, or as they got money. so it’s not uncommon to see, for example, large cathedrals that have the 1st floor/stage made of limestone, the second level constructed out of brick, and the top floor of concrete. shows changes in taste and how rich or poor the church was when that particular floor was built.

  2. I really just cannot believe it- just when I thought they couldn’t possibly get any uglier- Brownstoner goes and slaps us with the worst one yet!!!

  3. If I were the owner of this building, I would say that I intend it to be a “cultural center”. The rules of political correctness would dictate that all criticism then stop.

  4. A closer look at this block shows almost the entire block can be deemed a blight. This house and maybe a handful of others looked decent at the time the street view pic was taken.

  5. This has gone so far beyond bad that it’s awesome.
I mean – look at that cheap metal gutter. It goes right through the balcony overhang! Fantastic.
