fulton-map-1109.jpgWe received a number of emails last night from readers about a shooting that took place last night in Fort Greene; The Local also posted a late-night account of the incident. The emails we received put the shooting at around 8:15 on Fulton between South Elliott and South Portand; The Local gives a precise time of 8:23 p.m. and says that one victim was a black male of about 15 years in age and that the other victim was slightly older. One of the emails we received also noted that there were a lot of teenagers out on the street leading up to the shootings being “very rowdy.” Anyone know what was going on? Update: Here are some more details that a reader just sent in…Evidently the scuffle that lead to the shooting started at Atlantic Center about 7:45. The problem? Buffalo Wings is offering $.40 wings on Tuesdays, which has attracted kids from all over the city; in this case, the fact that the next day was a holiday only compounded the problem. According to the tipster, the commanding officer is working with mall security and management to end the promotion earlier. The tipster also said that the kids involved in the shooting were not from the neighborhood.

Update 12:52 pm: We just got the official report from Captain Tasso at the 88th. Turns out there were two separate shootings last night, the one discussed above in which two teens were shot but are in stable condition, and another (also non-life threatening) one at Flatbush and Fulton; there was also a stabbing in the vicinity of Atlantic Center. All three events are being linked to the buffalo wing promotion. There was a large police presence on hand that managed to send thousands of the teens home, obviously some managed to cause problems before leaving the area; none of individuals involved in any of the incidents were from the neighborhood.

  1. Has anyone ever been to Israel? Your bags are searched to go ANYWHERE… you enter any building and there is a 75% chance that a guard will inspect your belongings. I don’t see any problem with that.

  2. That is all I am saying and if you are a parent that really isn’t concerned about the where your kids are, then you shouldn’t have become a parent. Period

Well, it’s a little late for that if they are teens.

  3. The issue about whether or not to make parents responsible as well when the child has a gun is a very difficult one. Although in theory I am for it, it’s likely to further wreck a lot of homes. perhaps they are wrecked already if a child is carrying a gun.

In any case it’s clear that the gun laws need to be tighter. I’m a republican and i own guns (rifles) which are a different story in the country. The gun laws have to be different in an urban setting and obviously this all has to do with handguns.

  4. At Butterfly….
I wish there was something positive that these kids were doing other than hanging out.

  5. It was not a school night. There’s no school today (Veteran’s Day). The weather was balmy, maybe for the last time before winter. No school tomorrow. The wings place is a restaurant, not just a bar. 700 subway lines and bus lines converge within 2 blocks of the scene of the crime. Student metrocards work until 8:30 p.m.; if you got on the subway at 8:25, you have until 10:25 to get on the bus (or vice versa).

If you were growing up in the burbs where mommy or daddy had to pick you up in the car and take you home, they had a lot more control over your comings and goings. I got into plenty of trouble in the burbs and I always called to tell Mom and Dad where I was; had an afterschool job; I always did my homework too.

  6. “as DIBS would you have you believe, it is likely he has a gun (being non-white, and all).”

Where THE FUCK did I ever say anything about color in conjunction with the stop & search.

You’re an asshole, claudequex, a big one.

  7. Subway search is completely inapposite. The police have a specific right carved out of the “probable cause” requirement of the 4th amendment, which deals with searches and seizures. They can check anyone’s bag for any reason at any subway. You can say no, but then you can’t get on the subway there.

On the street, police must have probable cause to perform a stop and frisk. Not being white does not amount to probable cause.

Rob, i don’t doubt you feel annoyed when you get asked to open your bag. no doubt it inconveniences you and maybe even arouses your sense of injustice. but the dynamics surrounding your experience are COMPLETELY DIFFERENT than those of a non-white youth being stopped and frisked in the street, for no apparent reason other than, as DIBS would you have you believe, it is likely he has a gun (being non-white, and all). The equivalent would be a white guy saying it doesn’t bother him when someone calls him the “n” word.

Nobody wants to believe that legal and executive power are used to perpetuate social injustice. Rob, your initial point was correct though – the problem here is broader and is one shared by the community (it takes one to raise a child…).
