We received a number of emails last night from readers about a shooting that took place last night in Fort Greene; The Local also posted a late-night account of the incident. The emails we received put the shooting at around 8:15 on Fulton between South Elliott and South Portand; The Local gives a precise time of 8:23 p.m. and says that one victim was a black male of about 15 years in age and that the other victim was slightly older. One of the emails we received also noted that there were a lot of teenagers out on the street leading up to the shootings being “very rowdy.” Anyone know what was going on? Update: Here are some more details that a reader just sent in…Evidently the scuffle that lead to the shooting started at Atlantic Center about 7:45. The problem? Buffalo Wings is offering $.40 wings on Tuesdays, which has attracted kids from all over the city; in this case, the fact that the next day was a holiday only compounded the problem. According to the tipster, the commanding officer is working with mall security and management to end the promotion earlier. The tipster also said that the kids involved in the shooting were not from the neighborhood.
Update 12:52 pm: We just got the official report from Captain Tasso at the 88th. Turns out there were two separate shootings last night, the one discussed above in which two teens were shot but are in stable condition, and another (also non-life threatening) one at Flatbush and Fulton; there was also a stabbing in the vicinity of Atlantic Center. All three events are being linked to the buffalo wing promotion. There was a large police presence on hand that managed to send thousands of the teens home, obviously some managed to cause problems before leaving the area; none of individuals involved in any of the incidents were from the neighborhood.
Wasder, really I only smoke weed to take the edge off when I’m coming down from an awesome meth high. I’ve only “lost time” a couple of times and only once did I have blood splatters on my clothes.
“What gives the police the right to stop and search somebody?”
Reasonable suspicion of criminality – and it doesnt authorize a search – only a frisk – for the officers safety (i.e. make sure the person he is speaking to isnt concealing a weapon). – its been the law since the 60’s btw
“I wonder how many white folks on this forum have been stopped and frisked while walking down the street?”
Percentage-wise??? probably similar to the percentage of people posting here fitting the description of suspects in criminal cases – i.e. very few – appropriately.
Probably 50% of the posters here (or more) are women.
Over 80% of criminal suspects are non-white.
When you bitch and moan about how unfair it is that the police stop and frisk so many people of color, remember that virtually every gun taken from the street was/is likely to be used in a crime with a black or hispanic VICTIM.
tybur, that’s a gateway drug you know! Definitely causes violent tendencies. Haha.
again, it wasn’t a school night — today is a school holiday. Not that that makes it alright, but it’s good to know how all the variables worked together to make it a dangerous situation.
and not for nothing, mostly all teens of all races and classes dress predominantly in black colors. cool thing usually, not so much gangster thing.
I’ve never been searched. I’m (very) white and usually where I tie when I go to manhattan… I wonder if that has an impact since I’m not dressed as a “creative professional.”
If I’m not wearing a tie, I usually don’t have a bag.
But I say search away! But don’t take my weed.
This is chilling. It really is. This is why we have police; I am sure that a rumble which migrated that far was something that should have been detected by police, who should have been there to break it up. People can theorize all they want about teenagers and guns and family structure and race, but the last thing the world needs is another opinionated gasbag. I remember all the shootings around here — someone was killed last spring a block from my house at 5 pm during the week, a couple of shootings took place near the famed Putnam, Fulton corner and I have heard gunshots near my house on Fulton near the large apartment building on Carlton. What is really scary are the random victims — like the 92 year old lady recently who was shot and killed in her living room by a stray bullet in Queens I think. Scares the crap out of me… We don’t need police harassment but we need effective policing and every conceivable effort to get guns off the street.
Then it was probably the Dr. Seuss socks.

I wondered why were these kids out on a school night.
because they don’t want to be in their apartment and have to babysit their younger siblings while their moms are out at the clubs. seriously. there’s a gazillion reasons why kids would rather be on the street than at home.

Because you had a bag.
so did 100s of other people walking passed that table :-/
