fulton-map-1109.jpgWe received a number of emails last night from readers about a shooting that took place last night in Fort Greene; The Local also posted a late-night account of the incident. The emails we received put the shooting at around 8:15 on Fulton between South Elliott and South Portand; The Local gives a precise time of 8:23 p.m. and says that one victim was a black male of about 15 years in age and that the other victim was slightly older. One of the emails we received also noted that there were a lot of teenagers out on the street leading up to the shootings being “very rowdy.” Anyone know what was going on? Update: Here are some more details that a reader just sent in…Evidently the scuffle that lead to the shooting started at Atlantic Center about 7:45. The problem? Buffalo Wings is offering $.40 wings on Tuesdays, which has attracted kids from all over the city; in this case, the fact that the next day was a holiday only compounded the problem. According to the tipster, the commanding officer is working with mall security and management to end the promotion earlier. The tipster also said that the kids involved in the shooting were not from the neighborhood.

Update 12:52 pm: We just got the official report from Captain Tasso at the 88th. Turns out there were two separate shootings last night, the one discussed above in which two teens were shot but are in stable condition, and another (also non-life threatening) one at Flatbush and Fulton; there was also a stabbing in the vicinity of Atlantic Center. All three events are being linked to the buffalo wing promotion. There was a large police presence on hand that managed to send thousands of the teens home, obviously some managed to cause problems before leaving the area; none of individuals involved in any of the incidents were from the neighborhood.

  1. A terrorist with bombs would be just as happy to go to another station or wait it out until the cops leave. That is why the searches are so assinine!

How many bombs are prevented by the cops in cars at the entrance to every bridge and in a little booth at the entrance/exit of every subway tunnel that goes through the river?

Lots and lots of overtime there. Our tax dollars at work.

    Yeah, that’ll stop em!

  2. I think this is extremely irresponsible reporting. These are not the facts that happened last night—I was there. This report seems to boil down to “black teens were shot over chicken wings.” This blog is disgusting. Brownstoner, you moved to this neighborhood, yet you don’t really seem to understand it.

  3. “Subway search is completely inapposite. The police have a specific right carved out of the “probable cause” requirement of the 4th amendment, which deals with searches and seizures. They can check anyone’s bag for any reason at any subway. You can say no, but then you can’t get on the subway there.”

Claude, they might have the right, but my point is they are TOTALLY ineffective. Do you really think these searches will prevent an act of terrorism??

“but, in reality, if you have to get to work, you have to get on the train, and you really can’t avoid it.”

True, and, in reality, only the innocent people trying to get to work are the ones being inconvenienced. A terrorist with bombs would be just as happy to go to another station or wait it out until the cops leave. That is why the searches are so assinine!

  4. Teens shooting each other with guns on the streets is no little quality of life issue. It is a major concern and definitely something that can scare people away from a neighborhood. Car break-ins and stolen i-pods are one thing, but street shootings on a crowded retail street is another.

  5. Regarding the subway searches v. street searches, I agree there is a clear legal difference between the two, but I see no real moral difference.

Theoretically one can avoid the subway searches (by not riding the subway) while one cannot avoid the street searches, but, in reality, if you have to get to work, you have to get on the train, and you really can’t avoid it.

“there would be no way on this planet that I would allow a cop to touch without cause.”

You realize, of course, that this is a dangerous and stupid attitude. For you.

  6. No, no. You don’t understand. The buffalo wings special is part of a combined crime prevention program and economic stimulus plan . It’s a 5-10 year plan to get those kids so obese that they’ll really only be able to waddle from the couch their SUV’s (bought on credit) and will keep them off the streets.

  7. I was in the area too, and heard it all go down, watched for the next half hour or so..absolutely heartbreaking to hear it was a 15 year old.

You can’t just search groups of teenagers, just because they’re wearing the same outfit, can you? And in regards to subway searches, do teenagers carry guns in their backpacks anyways? I thought you keep ’em in your pants.. but could totally be wrong about that. Still, to randomly search a 15 year old’s school backpack to see if they’re a terrorist… pretty silly.

Cops or no cops, when angry teens have gang-related beef, you shoot and run. It can happen anywhere, and if it really was based on attracting all kinds of kids for wings (wtf??), then it has nothing to do with the neighborhood itself.

I don’t think that corner is all that gentrified.. if anything it’s still part of a beautiful, elegant old school upscale neighborhood, that’s been untouched by the poverty that’s destroyed myrtle.
