On Friday Gothamist reported that the Van Leeuwen ice cream truck was opening a permanent location in Boerum Hill this weekend. We stopped by 91 Bergen (right outside the subway stop) yesterday and the place was hopping. We like how the storefront turned out, too. Did anyone try it this weekend? GMAP

  1. Van Leeuwen truly is great. It’s my favorite ice cream in New York. Creamy and fresh tasting. I like the mint chocolate chip and the strawberry the best. I did not care for Blue Marble when I tried it. The strawberry tasted like candy instead of fresh fruit.

  2. What you say about Plusas and rob is true, randi, but snappy is one of those who usually smacks him with a dose of reality. Or at least tries too. As you can tell, with rob is ain’t easy.

  3. I used to think good quality ice creams were a bit of a rip off, until I started making my own ice cream at home…

If you use local/organic ingredients, it actually is pretty hard to keep your costs much below the cost of buying the ice cream in a store, and, well, it is a reasonable amount of work.

Obviously, still expensive — but not a rip off. You can decide for yourself whether it is worth it.
