On Friday Gothamist reported that the Van Leeuwen ice cream truck was opening a permanent location in Boerum Hill this weekend. We stopped by 91 Bergen (right outside the subway stop) yesterday and the place was hopping. We like how the storefront turned out, too. Did anyone try it this weekend? GMAP

  1. I walked by the other day with an elderly friend of mine, and we stopped take a breather and to ‘gawk’ at the goings on. One of the owners came out and chatted with us. I’m thinking it’s pretty nice to have a sit down ice cream place (in addition to others nearby). The ice cream is tasty and they have interesting/unusual flavors, and if they can get that price and make a good go of it, why not?

  2. when i saw the ice cream truck in manhattan the first time, I thought, what a great idea. the time they took to think about and execute just the truck is appreciated. when i saw it on bedford ave, was even more interested because i could take the kid there. when they opened right on manhattan ave in greenpoint near mccarren park, then i think i decided to love them. they have nice people, a good product, and the cafe on manhattan even has good coffee. the ice cream does taste homemade, and i don’t eat ice cream all the time or anything, and am not an expert, but give them props for their success. certainly has added, not taken away anything from north brooklyn because we didn’t really have anything similar before, so they didn’t replace anybody.

lol, no way. but it does prove that im not the only one who hates absurd pricing?

Stuff is priced at what the market will bear.

eh, i have issues with that. i do agree with it on one hand, but on the other hand, like i said, i have issues with it. that seems to be the same thing people always say to justify overpriced garbage.

Stuff is priced at what the market will bear.

I like the store design too.

    boring black facade… check

    sidewalk chalkboard… check

random sexually androgynous patron outside… check

(what do you REALLY like about it?)

Van Leeuwen truly is great. It’s my favorite ice cream in New York. Creamy and fresh tasting. I like the mint chocolate chip and the strawberry the best.

if you added more ridiculous superlatives you could be a yelper!
