The rumors about Associated’s takeover of the old Beso space on 5th Avenue near Union are looking solid. There’s a rendering of an expanded version of the supermarket pasted on the window of the recently shuttered restaurant that shows the grocery store (see photo on jump) also swallowing up the adjacent (and similarly closed) Donutscoffee shop. We’re looking forward to seeing a bigger supermarket in this spot, but we know a few Slopers who were hungry for another restaurant in the spot. Think it’s an OK trade-off? GMAP
Expect another “What we’re losing” type column to soon appear in “Forgotten New York” about the Donut Shop. You know, another of those “This is the end of civilization as we know it” stories.

I think that Associated should hire the interior designer who did that House of the Day over on 3rd St!
The Chinese take out on the South Side of the Associated is now out of business so a restaurant can open there – or Associated can et even bigger!
Good for Associated – perfect example of a local merchant taking ADVANTAGE of gentrification. They upgraded the store, improved merchandise (probably raised prices) and now is set for an expansion. American capitalism at its finest!
Once AY is built … I mean Whole Foods, Associated will be worthless (in 2026).
Beso had descended into awfulness. The expanded grocery store is VERY welcome.
i hope someone is able to salvage the sign for the donus shop. it’s so cute!!!
also, did anyone else notice that FLIGHT001 has now opened on 5th ave and bergen!!
such an amazing store.
i for one, welcome the expanded associated. one of the better markets in the neighborhood.
we’ve got plenty of good restaurants already.
Donut shop was the best place for egg sandwiches. Loved the counter girls accent. what will I do now when I want breakfast for under $2?
I like the Associated. The deli guy is real friendly!
Damn, DONUT SHOP is closing? Truly the end of an era…
