The Crow Hill Community Association sent us a petition against a pawn shop looking to move into 641-649 Franklin Avenue in Crown Heights, within the same building of the laundromat on Franklin and Park. They point out the illegal construction happening there, its proximity to a drug and alcohol rehab facility, and the feeling that “this pawn shop will encourage theft.” The petition also points out that it will “degrade the atmosphere of the street” and is a “recipe for disaster.” Commenters on Brooklynian noted an impromptu protest happened last Thursday outside the storefront. But as one commenter puts it, “I do actually agree that a pawn shop is likely not the best fit for this area, but really, where is the line drawn? Do we protest the 24-hour chicken place, because corner dealers may decide to get some wings at 3:am? Subways run 24/7 in this town, I bet certain types of miscreants make use of it. Let’s boycott subways as well.”

  1. “I don’t see why a pawnshop is necessarily a bad thing. It’s a business like all the others. And it does provide a service. Dealres are far more likely to hang out in front of 24 hour chicken wing stores than a 8-7 pawn shop.”

yeah – i agree. maybe not end of the world bad, but definitely sad as they basically do business in exploiting poor people who are hard up for cash.

  2. over-reaction. if this gets tons of stolen stuff, this makes it easy for cops to locate thieves and stolen merchandise. have to believe the pro’s outweigh the con’s. if someone is really down and need to pawn something, where else can that person go get some money or to monetize assets being considered for pawn shop.

  3. Rob, get over YOURSELF. You have no idea what kind of business I’d like to be there, and you have absolutely no idea of what kind of business I think is “below me”. I don’t have a ready list of businesses that are absolutely horrible, unlike you. I don’t drink coffee, either, so you’re wrong already.

You want to be pissy all day, go ahead, but don’t start pissing on me. I’m really not in the mood to indulge your childish whims today.

  4. Pawnshops are one of those businesses that get used. By good folk who are desperate and those who are bad, looking to unload stolen goods. I understand Crow Hill’s concerns but in all honesty I don’t see why a pawnshop is necessarily a bad thing. It’s a business like all the others. And it does provide a service. Dealres are far more likely to hang out in front of 24 hour chicken wing stores than a 8-7 pawn shop.

Crow Hill, and here i agree with MM, is a great organization which has worked really hard to bring back the neighborhood. But like the bail bonds place on Smith St., how much control should a neighborhood demand over legitimate businesses just because they don’t like them or feel they fit into their vision for it?

An honest business is an honest business- peronally I don’t think anyone should be turning up their noses at new businesses opening up. Unless it’s another loud restaurant/bar- those can be legitimately griped about. IMO

  5. get over yourself MM. just because you think a pawn shop is below you doesn’t mean it doesnt have the right to exist.

i know youd rather have some lame coffee shopt hat sells 10 dollar cups of coffee, but newsflash, not everyone likes that garbage.

  6. Speaking of businesses that the community aren’t happy over, I walked by The Smith on Saturday and I’m sure the residents of the high end condo and hotel aren’t thrilled by the brandy new Bail Bonds office that opened downstairs.
