Closing Bell: Slope-Heights Online Mugging Map

Although the 77th Precinct maintains a map detailing the locations of recent crimes, no such visual rendering is available online. Some folks on Brooklynian’s Prospect Heights message board are trying to change that. They’ve set up a map that allows anyone to report muggings or other violent incidents in the neighborhood, and they’ve also added data from published crime reports. Seems like a great community resource, though you have to wonder how many inaccurate or overblown reports are going to find their way into the mix. Nevertheless, neat stuff.

“So, 11:15, a white person who supports Obama is doing so because of liberal guilt? That’s the reason? If you believe that, then you are a bigot. And BTW, I’m not the poster you were answering.”
The original sentence:
“If voting for Obama assuages your inner feelings of white liberal guilt, and makes you feel good voting for a “rock star”, more power to you!”
Don’t try to project what you THINK I said onto my words, rather than what I REALLY said. That’s an “if-clause/conditional sentence”. It means “IF voting for Obama assuages your inner feelings of white liberal guilt, and makes you feel good voting for a “rock star”, THEN more power to you!” If you support Obama, and you LACK inner feelings of white liberal guilt, then more power to you as well!
In the words of the adviser to Hillary Clinton (wife of our “First Black President” according to Toni Morrison): “If you have a social need, you’re with Hillary. If you want Obama to be your imaginary hip black friend and you’re young and you have no social needs, then he’s cool.”
Take that one up with Hillary Clinton’s “anonymous adviser”! Do you also believe the anonymous “Clintonista” is also a bigot?
“If you believe that, then you are a bigot.”
As the saying goes, “A bigot/racist is anyone winning an argument with a liberal”.
“And good riddance to you and your pathetic excuse for a president.”
See my above comments for the definition of “ad hominem” attacks.
“your pathetic excuse for a president”
Are you insinuating that I’m a Bush supporter? Where did I say that? You can’t even construct a coherent argument without throwing in some four letter words, let alone resorting to “Straw Man” arguments:
The Straw Man fallacy is committed when a person simply ignores a person’s actual position and substitutes a distorted, exaggerated or misrepresented version of that position.
11:15, the Day Room is straight ahead. Take your meds. And good riddance to you and your pathetic excuse for a president. You assholes had your shot. Fuck the fuck off.
So, 11:15, a white person who supports Obama is doing so because of liberal guilt? That’s the reason? If you believe that, then you are a bigot. And BTW, I’m not the poster you were answering.
11:47 = Timmy the 8th grader
I got mugged by a black guy in the slope one.
he looked like barack obama
are you ok??
“you know how to do that rush…i mean 10:33??”
An ad hominem argument, also known as argumentum ad hominem (Latin: “argument to the man”, “argument against the man”) consists of replying to an argument or factual claim by attacking or appealing to a characteristic or belief of the person making the argument or claim, rather than by addressing the substance of the argument or producing evidence against the claim. The process of proving or disproving the claim is thereby subverted, and the argumentum ad hominem works to change the subject.
“who’s bringing more people together….obama or mccain?”
What does either of these 2 have to do with crime statistics in Brooklyn? You brought it up, not me.
I don’t care for either one. If voting for Obama assuages your inner feelings of white liberal guilt, and makes you feel good voting for a “rock star”, more power to you!
“huckabee or clinton?”
Same here. Don’t care for either. We wouldn’t even be discussing the pant suit wearing Clinton had she not just happen to marry a powerful white man. Huckapoo who?
“romney?”
The Republican “flip flop” version of John Kerry
“let’s focus on the 21st century instead of constantly looking towards the past.”
OK. So in the interest of “looking forward”, you’re in favor of dismantling affirmative action/racial preferences?
And, I suppose we can also agree that the moslems can no longer bring up “The Crusades” as a point of contention, since the last one was in the 13th Century?
“10:33…How are you any more tolerant than the person you just berated? Yours sounds like the most angry and hateful comment on this entire thread, to be honest.”
Wow, those last three paragraphs on Democrats belonging to the KKK, Civil Rights Act of 1964, Voting Rights Act of 1965, and Abraham Lincoln, must really be a heavy burden on your fragile psyche!
And this doesn’t qualify as “beratement”?:
“But there are a lot of ignorant people on here that don’t realize that, unfortunately. I liken them to the Republicans.”
Oh, I forgot, it’s OK to bash Republicans, because after all, this is New York City, it’s automatically assumed that we all are sophisticated intellectuals who march lock step and hold the same political beliefs, we all read the NY Times religiously, unlike those “Rubes” in the “Flyover states”. They don’t get their political thoughts from that political heavyweight Maureen Dowd like we do!
I think this map is illuminating. And almost every pin links to a media report of the crime.
@9:51 – The map means something. It means that crime were committed in the marked locations in recent months. It doesn’t aspire to be the complete historical record of all crimes, for all time.
“Actual crime statistics” – as you call them – are relatively useless for helping the Prospect Heights community understand where, how, and when crimes are being committed. The Compstat data from our precinct is released weekly and covers the ENTIRE 77th precinct, which spans from Flatbush all the way east to Ralph Avenue. It only breaks down crime to 7 categories, and gives no details on location within the precinct.
