Although the 77th Precinct maintains a map detailing the locations of recent crimes, no such visual rendering is available online. Some folks on Brooklynian’s Prospect Heights message board are trying to change that. They’ve set up a map that allows anyone to report muggings or other violent incidents in the neighborhood, and they’ve also added data from published crime reports. Seems like a great community resource, though you have to wonder how many inaccurate or overblown reports are going to find their way into the mix. Nevertheless, neat stuff.

i have lived in ny my enitre life 37 years
and have never been mugged. i used to stroll thru some pretty rought areas at odd hours
it all comes down to how you carry yourself
if you look like a victim you will be victimized
people ask for me directions everywhere i go
you know why? becuase i always look like i know exactly where i am. do not walk around
in a fog and unsure of your surroundings
it is a sure fire way to get mugged
and do not take the subway home @ 3am alone after drinking that is just plain stupid
and asking to be a victim

The brownstone neighborhoods are the ones that are often less safe than the middle-class Brooklyn neighborhoods (Bay Ridge, etc.).
Im a retired Detective 20 years NYPD. The 77 Pct is a sh_t whole Brooklyn has still quite a few bad areas. The Brooklyn DA does not like to put bad guys in Jail thats why the crime is still high in Bklyn and the Bronx. There is a running joke with Detectives in Bklyn that Charlie Hynes never met a bad guy he didn’t like. Nobody goes to Jail in bklyn for carrying an illegal gun and thats the truth if u don’t beleive me check the statues of the last 100 arrests in 2007 in bklyn for guns and u will see its true. Muggers do not always go to where the money is. Most muggings occur in the bad neighborhoods against thier own people. However whites are robbed mostly by minorities, I spent 4 years in robbery so I know this for a fact. All this bull going around is based on someones own ideas not the facts. And these are the facts.
“the map means nothing” comment is great! Nothing can impinge on your internally-constructed normative world can it? Especially not facts.
if you read alot of the links to the muggings you will find that most of the muggers were arrested.
To the guy who thinks muggers go where the money is – you are, to put it politely, uninformed.
