“Sexy people, ritzy lighting and comfy lounge furniture” is not a line we would use to describe many spots in Brooklyn, much less Gowanus. But the New York Post was apparently pretty impressed with the dance club that just had its soft opening at 424 Third Avenue. The club, called “Ultraviolet,” was a warehouse space and is now a three-story, very purple, dance-and-drink destination. As a Greenpoint visitor noted, Gowanus definitely doesn’t stink so much anymore.

  1. And yes, Pigeon….most nightclubs do attract a young crowd. That’s kinda the point. Most have strict door policies that check for ID to make sure they are legal.

You don’t really sound like a city person by your comments on this thread today. If a nightclub can’t open on an industrial stretch of Gowanus, where exactly do you propose one?

Or are you just against all nightclubs?

I’ve told some friends in the neighborhood about this place and they are about peeing their pants with excitement about a place nearby to go dance.

  2. “People do live in that neighborhood, you know.”

Yep, I’m one of them. But very few live right near this location. If you can’t have a nightclub there, I really don’t know where you can have one. Anyway, there’s already a popular rock venue right nearby, and I’ve never heard of any complaints.

In all seriousness, while I hope there aren’t problems with the noise (and don’t think there will be), I think some more foot traffic in this area will actually improve street life for people in this neighborhood. A less desolate 3rd ave will feel more comfortable and in turn encourage even more people to hang out here, I would think.

  3. A blemish? Haha seriously, have you seen the neighborhood? Yes, I’m really concerned that this will break the tranquil, scenic calm of the 3rd ave. truck route and prostitution venue.

  4. btw, who do you think will go to this nightclub?

Will the patrons be people who live in Gowanus?

    No.

Most likely, the nightclub patrons will be post-teens blasting their car stereos drunk at 4am and getting into fights.
