“Sexy people, ritzy lighting and comfy lounge furniture” is not a line we would use to describe many spots in Brooklyn, much less Gowanus. But the New York Post was apparently pretty impressed with the dance club that just had its soft opening at 424 Third Avenue. The club, called “Ultraviolet,” was a warehouse space and is now a three-story, very purple, dance-and-drink destination. As a Greenpoint visitor noted, Gowanus definitely doesn’t stink so much anymore.

  1. I agree with dirty hipster.

A night club is a blemish on the neighborhood.
And night club noise is never contained. It spills out, in one form or another, for many blocks.
People do live in that neighborhood, you know.

If we’re lucky, Gowanus will get superfunded against sound pollution.

  2. I don’t completely know what to make of this, but sure, what the hell, I’ll check it out. And yes, it’s definitely cool to see the Gowanus nightlife growing, particularly in a way that distinguishes it from Park Slope and Carroll Gardens – a bit grittier, louder, etc. Probably younger, too?

As a sidenote, I actually DO like living in Gowanus. I have about the same attitude towards Park Slope that 11217 has toward Gowanus – I’m happy it’s right there, but also glad I don’t have to live there all the time.

  3. “oh great, night club city. soon all the noisee, shootings, etc. And is this driving other businesses out…once the alcohol selling stuff moves in — other places businesses that employ lot more people can’t afford the rents. ”

    Dude – it’s 3rd Ave

  5. But yeah – Brooklyn needs a new club that hosts good DJs – especially since Studio B closed last year. Brooklyn Bowl has some good parties (especially questlove thursdays) – but its just not the same.

Hopefully this place fills that void, and doesn’t end up being some stupid bottle service lounge.

  6. Hopefully Gowanus will continue bringing in new businesses that maintain that feeling of industrial grittiness, not try to modernize it, an no residential towers please. This can be like the meat packing district, before it started sucking.

Oh, we’re gonna need some trannies too.
