  2. Dental dams are used as part of the root canal process. It is a rubber sheet spread over the affected area to keep saliva and germs away from the exposed dental canal, when the dentist is removing the nerve and blood vessels from the root of the tooth. That area has to be completely sterile to prevent infection.
