In my sub-field (Information Technology Infrastructure) there are a number of people without degrees who have worked their way up, including my boss’s boss.
A disproportionate number seem to have gotten started in the military, although I have seen many other paths to success.
I am guessing my undergrad saved me 5-10 years between better initial placement and faster advancement, while my MBA probably saved me another 5 years in getting promoted to management.
Degrees definitely open doors and the networking possibilities. I’m also more talking about the past when it was easier to “work your way up.” I knew a lot of guys at Drexel that were rollers from canarsie and the south side of Chicago with no college education.
dibs- I think that a degree represents (in addition to some set of knowledge) a networking opportunity and a shorthand definition of who/what you are for people who are hiring.
Not that that’s an accurate way to judge people, but I think that’s how it often functions IRL.
DIBS, I know a bunch of people who got close to 1600 on sat without any studying at all and were lazy ass C+/B- students. but they the exceptions vs the norm. nowadays, the big banks and big hedgies are much harder to get into the game without fancy big school degree which wasnt the case back in the days
Lech- Obviously depends on when and where, I’d say the bottom end of the folks I’m talking about in this case is several hundred thousand annually [people who wanted to live comfortably] to a couple million [people who really liked money and went into the money business].
(for 35yos in new york.)
Not the richest people out there, but certainly doing well enough to feel like they’re not failing at their goal of having money.
There have been large numbers of people who have made a lot of money in my business without college degrees and certainly without grad school degrees. A lot of the traders and sales traders.
