One of the most frightening and gruesome movie scenes I’ve seen is in The Stand, where 2 characters walk out of New York through the Lincoln Tunnel, which is filled with people who died of the Superflu while in their cars. I seem to recall the description in the book being even worse. I would’ve walked to a bridge to escape.
ha ha, you got it.
It looked much more like a mermaid when I typed it here on the computer.
Once I posted it though, it got deformed so I decided to
call it an owl,
maybe a “bushtit” like bfarwell suggested.
lech,
I remember reading something about that at the Jamaica Wildlife preserve.
They had a display on common plants of New York and I was surprised about how many were transplanted from other continents.
Trivia fact: the ailanthus tree was first brought over from China, and cultivated in Brooklyn. It was brought over by entrepeneurs who hoped to cultivate silkworms here, rather than importing them from China. The silk was needed as basic material for the mills that used to be concentrated in Paterson, NJ.
Nowadays, of course, it is the “weed tree” that seems to thrive everywhere.

Legion, a lot of what you think are natives are just european invasives from 500 years ago.
So are most of the people on Fifth Avenue.
Also: the ailanthus is the “Tree that Grows in Brooklyn’, per the book of that name.

“Egrets, I’ve had a few, but then again, too few too mention.”
Show tunes get an automatic GOTD.
