  1. The next Brownstoner lunch club should follow the principles of a world hunger teach-in; everyone draws lots and:

    20% get to eat whatever they want
    50% get rice
    30% get water and a carrot

    “If 90% are employed, they should be able to comfortably support the 10% which aren’t”

    The 90% pay MORE THAN ENOUGH to do so already. The problem is that the government wastes it.

  3. kens,
    I think that classroom story cuts through everything and explains it.
    We cannot have a system of government and economics which does not take into account its own raison d’etre. In this case human beings and human nature.

  4. Denton;

    Buffet’s statement leaves me absolutely cold. His basic point is that life is but a jackpot, and the House (govt.) is entitled to its cut. I do not deny that fortune plays a role in life, but it is far from everything. I would suggest that you read the final couple of paragraphs of Emerson’s essay “Self-reliance” as a counterpoint to Buffet’s tripe.

    That’s exactly it jessi,
    we the people give Washington bureaucrats about 13 trillion a year.
    and it’s still not enough! Since when did the people become the business end of the IRS?
    The government should be fearing the people, not the other way around. That’s Thomas Jefferson speaking not me. 😉
