Donatella;
You are mixing apples and oranges.
I can see how some people believe it is not appropriate to leave their kids a large inheritance. If people want to give away their fortune, that is their right. The issue at stake is what the government is entitled to take.
I repeat my stance: I believe that the inheritance tax is unique among all taxes in that it is immoral. It confiscates thrift, in addition to being a double taxation.
I see things Denton’s way. I think my parents think that way too and it is fine. I have said that my parents had plenty of kids. Neither of them made a lot of money but managed to give us the basics, which did not include college. We all managed that on our own. It never even occurred to them, I have to say. And now that they are old, we (or they) don’t think in terms of their giving us anything. Not that they have a lot. They gave us their youth and their hard work. Now (or at least before the both of them got sick around Christmas) they spend their money on cruises or making themselves happy, though they have the habit of frugality from a lifetime of it. If they give me (or us) nothing, I don’t care. Not a bit.
DH, huh? What does answer keys and stealing books have anything to do with it?
If you got an A cause you studied and really received a B while other slacked, would you study just as hard to get an A again knowing you’ll get a B or a C? Or would you catch people outside the school and threaten to beat them up unless they study just as hard as you with hopes that everyone gets an A?

IJ: great to see you back.
Pure socialism does not work.
Pure capitalism does not work.
All functioning democracies have a mix of the two.
The big question is how to do the mixing.

I used to let Jimmy Kircher cheat off of my test answers in grade school. I had a crush on him and just wanted to see his pee pee.

The next Brownstoner lunch club should follow the principles of a world hunger teach-in; everyone draws lots and:
20% get to eat whatever they want
50% get rice
30% get water and a carrot
And I suppose the Republicans will have to foot the entire bill.
