  1. On WTC, it’s also taken a while because of the complex financial situation with insurance payments and the fact that the new office space of that magnitude isn’t financeable. Not to mention the engineering component.

I’m not knowledgeable, but I like Scott’s plan. My only reaction is that tax compliance is a big industry that you just wiped out. GE alone employs 925 people in that dept, not to mention the lobbyists.

  2. look – I am not the most patriotic person – I went through my phase in my twenties of not standing during the pledge or national anthem etc – but I got over it and truthfully stand in respect for our troops – I think it’s important for kids to learn and recite it even if they don’t know what the words meant – haaa
indivisible – I mean that word was lost on me until maybe a few years ago!!!

  3. Does anyone know if the law mandates that “under God” be recited as part of the pledge? I seem to recall a court challenge to the pledge years ago, perhaps reaching the Supremes, but I don’t recall exactly.

  4. I think that corporate income taxes should be totally eliminated.
They are way too complex to administer, and it is impossible to eliminate all loopholes.
I think it would lead to more efficient use of capital, since tax implications would no long play a hug role in financing decisions.

I would make up the revenue with increasing the tax on dividends and capital gains. For investors it should be a wash, since the the tax increase would be offset by increased corporate profits.

OK, now I’ll sit back and wait for the more knowledgeable people here to destroy my plan 🙂

  5. Slopey, I don’t have the numbers but for many years in the 90s and 00s public spending was virtually the only component of growth. Japan did get the reputation of building “roads to nowhere.”

When you travel around japan you are amazed at the quality (and cleanliness) of the highway system.

  6. Honestly – I agree with Dibs – I think it’s disgusting that in the US and NYC specifically – our local govt’s can’t work quicker to get the paperwork together and choose the right contractors to get work done on time and within budget or at least within 10% of the original budget. I guess China/Japan can and are willing to move quicker on massive projects that benefit everyone b/c they still believe in the community comes first over the individual.
