  1. “No. I have tried many times to teach other people how to trade and it does not seem to be possible.”

So how do you propose people get out of poverty? Just wondering your thoughts. Or do you think it’s sorta to do with figuring out your strengths (for you, the market) and going with it?

(thanks for clarification re: you and daytrading)

  2. “DCB – does your poverty reduction program involve teaching the poor how to daytrade?”

No. I have tried many times to teach other people how to trade and it does not seem to be possible.
By the way, I am not a daytrader. A daytrader is someone who does not hold trades (I was going to say positions – but I know where that would lead) overnight.

That is not what I do.

And to be clear, I’m not indicting greed, that stuff’s fine, my problem is with the freebies that get handed out to people just because they are in a position to spend other people’s money (the other people usually being shareholders).

I am aware of a company where the CFO instructs one of the company officers to obtain baseball playoff tix for him each year. The guy makes one call to an investment banker who wants to get the next underwriting mandate, tix are there the next day. That’s just one example. This stuff is everywhere but no one really says anything because either they’re getting free stuff of they think they will someday.

  4. “Some people win the lottery every day too.”

I knew somebody was going to bring up the lottery. I do not advise playing the lottery as a plan to alleviate poverty.

Many people have parents who struggled. My own father grew up in abject poverty. My mom grew up middle class.

  5. dcb – That’s a trifle naive, no? Illness, accidents happen.
Anyway, on a different topic, I have a niece who wants to buy a laptop (doesn’t have to be especially portable). We’re soliciting suggestions on what to get. She is tending toward:
AMD Phenom II Triple-Core Mobile N850
    Thoughts? Thanks!
